Though I'm planning to bring her to the pediatrician, is it normal to feel pain when being washed? I also noticed my one year old baby daughter to be like her, pulling away from me when I'm washing her there.

First, one thing I've learned raising three girls is that nothing is ever normal where they are concerned. They'll always be different in many ways from other people's children.

That being said, there are two possibilities for what's going on.

1. They may just be reacting to certain 'nerves' being touched. Since they are present from birth and always hold a certain sensitivity, your children may just not like the strangeness of having those nerves scrubbed and you most likely are making contact with them during their bath. One thing you might try for the older one is let her scrub that area herself, maybe with your help at first, but by herself once she's used to doing it. Being kids, they won't like having those weird feelings and they could feel a lot like pain to them since it is not what they consider 'normal' for them.

2. Another thing is, have the doctor make sure that everything looks normal with them down there. It's probably nothing, but you might want to make sure nothing bad is being done to them, which is possible, but not probable.

I think the problem is just them not liking those nerves scrubbed. Kids will say that anything foreign feeling is pain. That part is normal.

No, shouldn't hurt if washing gently. Take them both to a paediatritian. It could be sensitivity to soap or bath products, you could be washing too vigourously, they could have a U.T.I. or thrush infection ( neither are uncommon). Teach your 3 year old how to wash herself properly and gently, and good hygiene after using the toilet. Your 1 year old should follow her lead. Ask her if there is another reason... can you ask her if anyone else has touched her there???? not easy tho

My 5 Year old little girl does the same thing. I think they do not know how to explain the feeling when you are washing them. I have encourage my daughter to wash herself and even when she has been red and I have put desitin on her (she had been in her swimsuit both days all day long on the weekend) she does the same thing whenever I come close to her clitoris(sp?). I also think it is so senistive that we as moms sometimes forget that we need to be extra gentle. I have asked my daughter to stand and put one foot on the side of the tub so I can clean her easily.

It's probably just the soap that you are using. Try washing that area with just a baby wipe made for sensitive skin with no dyes or scents added. That may help. Talk to your pediatrician about it as well, but they may just be sensitive to soaps, etc.

Are you washing too hard? also, some babies (especially girls) are allergic to some bubbles, which can cause a UTI or a yeast infection. Try using a bath w/out bubbles, or get some over-the-counter hydrocortizone cream.

Do you use soap? If so, it could be a sensitivity to the soap you are using. Some girls are very sensitive there and it wouldn't hurt to ask the doctor. Don't be too forceful and really, she just needs to be generally cleaned, nothing intense.

My 5yr old daughter does the same thing. I have found that some overly scented soaps are to harsh on her sensitive area. another thing is bubble bath...everytime we would use bubblebath, she would complain that it hurt her genitals.
All that brightly colored, fun for kids bubblebath is off my shopping list now.

Don't scrub them too hard. That is a sensitive area. It doesn't have to be scrubbed extra hard to get it clean.

Are they in daycare? Perhaps someone is getting to them. Have them checked and until then don't leave them in the care of anyone else...
