I just finished the Life of Pi and was intrigued with his encounter with the "carnivorous island." Is that true or just fiction? Also, the introduction makes it sound like it is meant to be a true story. I assume it isn't. Is this correct?

All land is carniverous. It just either has trouble getting its mouth open, or is really sneaky about it.
