Im planning to buy a computer with vista, and they tell me I have to pay $80 for this dumb microsoft office or watever with word. any way to avoid paying, by using an older version perhaps? Also, is vista that great? If I buy a computer with Windows XP instead what am I missing out on? Will my gaming needs be hampered?

If you consider Word "dumb", of course you don't have to pay for it. Just don't expect to use it, either. But of course, if it's "dumb" why would you want to use it?

By the way, $80 is a very good price for a legal copy of Word.

Vista is o.k. - just takes some relearning which I do not have the patience to do at this time -- no need. Microsoft is going to offer support (non technical) for XP until 2012, so I'm staying with it until I have to change. With that said, read on:

Can your computer be upgraded to Vista?

Whether your PC can be updated depends on when you purchased your computer.
Here are some general rules of thumb to get you started.
If your PC was purchased between Oct. 26, 2006 and Mar. 15, 2007 then you are eligible for the FREE Express Upgrade to Windows Vista.**
If your PC isn't "Windows Vista Capable*" use the Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to get a recommendation for the edition of Windows Vista that is right for you.
If your PC is more than 1 year old - check first with the Microsoft Windows Vista Advisor Tool.
The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will help you to determine if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista.

You can install an older version of Office on Vista. IMHO Vista is not that great and I would stick with XP. Vista is a huge memory hog. What are you missing with XP....Nothing except frustration and constant patch updates. Also the nice Allow or Disallow all the time. Unless you enjoy tinkering with all of that. Your gaming should be fine on XP as long as your video card and RAM memory meet the requirements.

The best way to avoid paying is to avoid using it. Try using OpenOffice.org instead. It has all the features of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, etc. without the cost. It is also compatible with files from MS Office and other similar applications.

Try it out, you'll never consider spending hundreds on office again.

Vista isn't comptible with alot of games and programs, i prefer to stick with XP till this is better handled on micorsofts end. thats the only reason i haven't upgraded. Most likely your games will be effected. Another alternative to office is a free program at openoffice.org
