i am an XC runner and my team runs 6 days a week 3-10 miles. i will miss a week of training b/c ill be on vacation. is it bad torun in sand along the beach? please give me advice on sand running. thanks

No as already said its fine to run on the sand, it reduces the impact as its a softer surface so its better for your joints. The closer to the water line you go the firmer the sand will be, the firmer the sand is the easier it is to run across. Whether you wear shoes is really up to you, I personally would, but if it was a clean soft beach you could run barefoot, if your used to running with shoes though I reccomend you do.

Some sand running is good for all the reasons sited in the other posts. Since it sounds like your body is not used to sand, it is a good idea to cut down on your accustomed mileage. If you over-do it, you will be very sore and could expose yourself to risk of injury. Same goes for barefoot running. Some is nice, too much, not so nice. I used to live on Padre Island and ran in sand and surf a lot; sand is what they use in sandpaper! Too much barefoot running in the sand can leave you with very raw feet!

It's not bad, although slipping is possible, and I would recommend doing it without shoes unless there are too many rocks or shells that might poke you. Your feet will sink into the sand which is not at all like running on a track or XC trail, and it will feel wierd, but I guess its better than nothing.

No it isnt actually. truley the best thing for running is that. Works a lot of stability muscles in legs, core and back. with the sand always shifting below your feet. you may be a little sore after doing so. but that is because you are using muscles that dont get used a whole lot. also uphill in sand is the best thing for runners to do to improve hamstrings, but make sure you walk down the hill, it is not good for your knees and back to run down a hill.

No. Actually, running in sand is an EXCELLENT work out. The sand will drag you down and force you to pump your legs harder. When my soccer coach wanted us to have an intense work out, he would make us run in a sand volleyball court...around and around for quite a while. And we sometimes took trips to the beach just so that we could run.

So from experience I can say that there's nothing wrong with it. Good Luck!

1. DONT WEAR THE SHOES. scientists proved that running barefoot actually make your feet stronger. evidence-- kenyans always winning marathons, they race barefoot -- thats why they came out with nike frees. so run barefoot in the sand, and you will prove to be a monster on solid surfaces.

2. RUN IN THE DRY, VERY LOOSE SAND. this is great for your feet, calves, and thighs. its like having no support under you so you are forced to work twice as hard.

It's actually a GREAT way to run. You work a little harder to run in sand, don't run in the deep soft stuff, run closer to the water line so it's firmer, that way you don't over do it.
Besides, you get to enjoy the clear air, and check out the "scenary" too!!

it actually isn't because your feet can't get a good sound stabalized surface because the sand is so soft. It's the same thing on a treadmill because the surface is always moving. If you do run on sand, your hamstrings overwork and they get tired more easily.
