The Coptic Church had its foundation in Egypt. From there it went to Ethiopia and, subsequently, Eritrea after the war which split the two nations. There is both a Coptic Orthodox Church and a Coptic Catholic Church. Their ancient language is Ge'ez and I believe that their current litugical language is Amharic. They are a very strict group....fasting more than 200 days out of the year....from meat AND ALL animal products. I believe that they still practice circumcision. When in the sanctuary, the priests remove their shoes.

The Coptic Church originated in northern Egypt near the border with what is today Saudi Arabia. This Church traces itself back to the time when the Holy Family lived in exile in that part of Egypt. It is said that when the Apostle Jude went into the desert to preach to the tribes there that the people who had first sheltered the Holy Family remembered them and asked for entry into the church en masse.
It is believed that many of the Gnostic Gospels which were written in the second and early third century AD came from this group of Christians, especially the "Infancy Gospel of St. Thomas" and "The Gospel of Mary".
Hope this helped.

Egypt. The term "Copts" is equivalent to the word "Egyptians." It is derived from the Greek "Aigyyptos," which in turns is derived from the ancient Egyptian "Ha-ka-Ptah," i.e. "the house of the spirit Ptah," a most highly revered deity in Egyptian mythology. From the Arab conquest and until today, This term refers to the Christian Egyptians to distinguish them from the native Muslims.
