There are 5 senses in which we rely on. Visual is dominate (but frighteningly unreliable), however I hear Him, & feel Him (i don't taste him or smell him), but if I really look hard, I can see bits an pieces of Him. We just have to know where to look =0) , so when I'm feeling disconnected, remembering His faithfulness, and His 'freeing me from Egypt' keep me focused on him.
Peace and Blessings.

This is a pretty complicated question, that thousands of books have been written on, and the greatest and most respected thinkers have weighed in on, and have fallen on either side of the question, however, I will do my best to briefly answer. First it must be noted much of life is a matter of faith. Christianity is defined as a matter of faith, as well as all religions, and it could be argued that Atheism is a matter of faith, since their belief can not be proven. Evolution is a matter of faith (macro evolution can not be observed and then repeated, so in other words it is scientifically unproveable) Love is a matter of faith, tomorrow is a matter of faith. Virtues and what most of us think make life worth living are all matters of faith. Now, pure blind faith I believe can be a bad thing, and can lead to hate and fear, so I am not encouraging it here. However, some of the basic reasons for belief in God are the cosmological arguement. (all things that have a beginning have a cause, the evidence points to our universe having a beginning i.e.-cosmic background radiation, 2nd law of thermodynamics, Einstein's theory of relativity. Another line of evidence is the teleological proofs, which some refer to evidence of design. There are thousands of specific circumstances that are maticulous and mathematically precise within our own planet and the entire universe that must be in place for life on earth to exist. Remove one of these details, and life no longer exists. Bottom line life is more highly functioning, detailed, and purpose driven, than any peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches never comes together by random, natural forces, no the sandwich is always created by intelligence. There is also the ontological arguement, which is just a logic formula. There is also the moral arguement, and there is also the Jesus arguement, which has to do with historical matters concerning Jesus, as well as the significance of Jesus. C.S. Lewis argued since most agree that Jesus definitely existed, and if he really claimed to be the Son of God, we have only 3 choices. He was either a liar, and thus very evil, or he was psychotic and deserves our sympathy, or he was telling the truth in that case deserving of our worship. There is so much more to discuss, but this is such an important and weighty topic that I don't want to do it injustice by glossing over it simply. We must always remain humble and have reverence for the great mystery, other wise pride may be our downfall. Einstein, while not a christian was annoyed by atheist who didn't have a healthy respect and awe for the complex harmony of the cosmos. So we can talk so much that every word loses its power. An admitted circular reason for believing is that God built us to believe according to Christianity. Without belief in him life is absolutely random, absolutely meaningless, and selfishness should be the prescription for living, of course selfishness would fall behind survival of the fittest. However, I must say this, where is your heart on this matter? The reason I ask this is because of my own tour of skepticism. We people who think our selves to be intelligent sometimes are oblivious to the truth about our selves. It is my observation that most people's "heads" follow closely behind most people's "hearts" That is to say, if your will desires that God doesn't exist, then your head will try desperately to make that case, and if your will is truly open and seeking God, then your head will make every attempt to strive towards him, and will indeed find him. But if your heart has already made its mind up concerning the Great Mystery, then your head will obey.

Why are people giving "thumbs up" to the answer FAITH?
That makes no sense. People don't believe in God because of faith, faith IS the belief in God. So it's like saying "people believe in God because they believe in God". Wow, very insightful.
Now, to really answer the question of "why do people believe in God?":
A lot of them do so because they were brainwashed as children to do so, just as they were the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, and Santa Claus. Then they are told those other things are made up but God is real and if you don't believe then you will go to hell (there's an attention getter if ever there was one).
But for the more intellectual people, they do so because they want to believe that there is something more than just our corporeal existence, that mankind has reason and purpose beyond our years on Earth.
Otherwise, what would be the point of morality and ethics? Why not just do whatever you want, since you're only here for a short time and gone forever? Why not kill others in your way and take their stuff to make your own life more comfortable?
Many things in the universe are unknown and unexplainable. Humanity is inherently afraid of the unknown, and the belief of God gives comfort, and an explanation, to a lot of it.
And if belief in God brings comfort, morality, and contentment to people's lives, then God does exist for them.

Because it is what separates us from the animals. We eat and give thanks to the farmers, we fall in love and get married and hopefully have children and live a long life. Yet it always comes back to something bigger than us. Even the Atheist has to deny God, but, why deny something that doesn't exist? If you have a problem with organized religion it doesn't mean you don't believe in God. The answer is, because you want to. ( just as the atheist wants to give every positive answer a "thumbs down". Why should he care what we choose to believe?)

Faith is defined as the belief in something that cannot be proven true.
You should really analyze this question, because you may be coming into some real answers if you just meditate (or pray) and really listen for what your mind (or God) has to say.
There recently (7-7-07) was a harmonic shift in the cosmos and allot of people (myself included) have been called. Maybe these questions being asked aren't questions, only hints to something more than what you have been taught. Pray for answers, child. I will pray with you.

Why should people not believe in an 'invisible' God? Do you think that they would be happier with one the could see?
We believe in oxygen and wind without seeing either, and I can't actually see electricity either, but that's another matter.

Because we see the subtle hand of his work in every day life?
Faith?
The persistent need to have understanding in what appears to be a heartless and chaotic system?
Because when we talk to him he answers?
Because man in a funny hat tells us he is real?
There are many reasons to believe in things we cannot see, we believe in gravity, though we have never seen it only it's effects. We believe in air, yet it is invisible. Visible is not the litmus test of faith or belief.

We have faith in him, because of our surroundings, everything he created is so perfect, how flowers grow, how a baby is formed, its all too perfect and wonderful to have simply made itself, plus we have the bible, which is the only book in the world, the only book EVER, that is precise in every word, it cannot be a simple coincidence all the prophecies in it, no human can ever write a book comparing to the bible, it had to be God who inspired it, the prophecies in the bible are all true, and are coming true, there are still some left to come true, and one of those, is the prophecy of Arrmageddon, which is very close, and those who follow it word for word, have the opportunity to live in the new world following Arrmaggedon. He does exist, its just this world is so evolved and so currupt that some people dont trust in him anymore. and thats exactly wat satan wants from us, is to forget about God and disobey him.
