My husband wants to take my van on a hunting trip and pull a trailer with a 4 wheeler and a bunch of other stuff. He would have to put a tow package on, but what about the internal components? Is it a wise decision? I don't think it's made for this kind of stuff. I really don't want him taking it.

Your owner's manual will tell you how much the Sienna can tow with a tow package. Be aware that a Tow Pkg is more than having a ball and hitch installed on the rear. He should look into having Toyota adding the package because it needs a heavy-duty cooling system and possibly a tranny cooler. Doing it aftermarket may affect or void the warranty.

While this can be done, I agree with you. Even if that Sienna has the All Wheel Drive system I wouldn't do it. These vans are primarily front wheel drive- so you can imagine what that transmission will go through pulling a trailer with a load. I know it's done all of the time but really, is it a good idea? Talk to the dealer about it first.

The 2007 Toyota Sienna is rated with a tow capacity of 3500lb. Which should be able to accommodate towing a trailer and 4 wheeler.

Towing anything typically does put additional strain on the transmission and the brakes but the Sienna should be able to handle it.

However, if the vehicle is yours and you don't want him taking it, just don't let him take it, but the excuse of the vehicle not being able to handle it is probably a poor argument.

There's an excellent website called Draw Tite. They provide a chart that you may fill in and it will determine exactly which hitch size and capacity your Sienna is designed to handle. I'm shooting from the hip here but your car is able to handle a category 1 hitch. It's capacity is 1,000 lbs. total weight. Toyota's (I have one) are famous for not offering any towing packages, engine oil coolers, transmission coolers, trailering radiators, heavy duty alternators, batteries and other preventative measures to keep things safely together. A category one is a scary hitch. 1" x 1"receiver and with your uni-body frame the1,000 pound hitch is very over sized for any Toyota car, Your operators manual tells exactly what the pulling and weight capacity is.

Some Toyo Sienna's or even yours have options from the manufacturer for towing packages. As long as he gets the correct installation and makes sure that he does it under the correct install per dealership ( to not to bypass warranty's ), then he/you should be okay....Adding that much weight to the back of a vehicle that is not already ready for towing can cause big problems.
