Sell by dates are another example of the waste of food worldwide.I eat anything that smells ok and rarely waste anything as it is also a waste of your hard earned income.

Yes, you can eat food past its sell by date If the food is fresh do NOT eat past the best before - you risk food poisoning and if food is canned, frozen etc then the quality of the food also deteriorates over time so i wouldn't eat those either after the best before date. Those dates are there for a reason

Oh yeah sure.
It suprises me how many people don't.
Had a chocolate pudding last night that use by date was 1 July, no probs.
People used to have common sense, not sure what's happened over the past 20 years.
The worst i did was beer that was 15 years out of date....but that did involve a susequent trip to the doctors so probably not an ideal example ;-)

Go by smell not looks it is a better guide.
Companies cannot afford to risk pushing use by/sell by dates to far out because of 'naughty' shop keepers (and sales potential) the last thing they need is to be involved in a court case over 'dodgy' food.
Christmas puds have a bit of alcohol in so are well preserved, if such items are stored in cool dry places they will keep for a long time.

Yes, I do all the time. Sell by dates are usually dated on the side of caution to keep people from eating bad food and then blaming the supermarket for selling it to them.

Never! I even question items if it's the same day as the expiration date. And I equate sell by date with expiration date. I've never had a bad experience, but I've always been like that.

Yes, but have a good look and smell first.
Often, shops put on a sell by date that is very short, basically to cover their backs and also to get people to buy stuff sooner.
If you think its ok it probably is.

usually its fine if its a few days past date but if your talking about milk or fresh produce, than i would have to say no... vacuum sealed things like that pudding are fine... my grandma has canned veggies she eats that expired in 1992 and they are still fine... it just depends on what your eating i guess
