Yes, it matters a lot. If their faith is in a god and you don't believe in such things, that's a problem. If they're anti-intellectual and you think knowledge is a good in itself, that's a problem. You'll mix like oil and water.

In a relationship these things matter to be compatible. You find out by communicating with the other person, sharing about yourself, and asking questions. Some people have such strong convictions on certain issues that they cannot bend to allow someone with differing opinions close to them.

if you are talking about a spouse, YES it does matter.
it is always wise to talk about each other's life plans, goals, how to handle finances, children.
it's also a good idea to step back and watch the person you are with closely. can you deal with their behaviors? are they honest, compassionate? do you like their qualities, in other words?
communicate and observe -- that's how you find out.
