I am a NREMT-B and to drive for any ambulance company i have ever worked for I have needed to have my EVO (Emergency Vehicle Operator) license. Now this is for Delaware and may very well be different in your state. You do have a few options to get the information you need. You can
1: Speak with the company you want to work for or any company if you have none in mind yet.
2: Talk to people at a local ambulance station and get input from them.
3: Go straight to the source and call the Fire School for your state. They will be able to tell you what you need, when the class is if you need one, how much the class and license costs, how long its good for, the whole nine yards.
To get an EVO license in Delaware, a person would have to first take the class which was free for us most of the time as a firehouse usually hosts it. Second, take the card they send you and have your supervisor or sponsoring agency endorse it saying that you do in fact work for them. Lastly, go to the DMV or similar in your state, and present them the card with endorsement, and your license and they will in turn upgrade you to an EVO license. Some states may require you to have your CPR certification to drive the ambulances, not sure thought because I had mine when I went. I now hold a non-cdl class a so i can drive all the fire trucks as well... same procedure.
Best of luck to you, we can always use more drivers down here in Delaware :)

This varies from state to state and even from country to country. In some states the only requirement for driving an ambulance is to be the age of 21, a good driving record, and a 16 - 24 hour course in Emergency Vehicle Operations. This is usually referred to as EVOC or CEVO (Coached Emergency Vehicle Operations).
Some states may require what is known as a for hire license, the same that Taxi drivers have to have. But mainly it depends on the organization and their Insurance providers.
Now to work on an ambulance is a different story, the minimum level of training needed in the U.S. is Emergency Medical Technician Basic, but some companies do hire just CEVO's but usually require them to obtain certification as an EMT within a certain amount of time.
Hope this helps and let me know if there is anything else that I can assist you with.

To drive an ambulance you DO NOT need to be an emt if your working for a volunteer fire and rescue
some full time ems departments do hire just full time drivers without being an emt but not usually
yes you need a special license you have to go thru EVOC (emergency vehicle operator course) and at the end of the course and all of your hours you will receive the license/certificate..
if you google evoc and your state youll come up with someone offering the course (usually held at a fire department)

In Missouri, you don't have to have a chauffer's license to drive an ambulance, but many employers do require it. You also have to have a minimum of EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician-Basic) in order to do this. This is usually a college semester class, but additional testing.
BTW, paramedics and EMT-Bs often taken offense at being labeled "ambulance driver".

If I am correct you need a CDL license to drive a rescue vehicle because that is a civil service job and a county vehicle that you are referring to not unless you are talking about a private ambulance service and even them I think you need a CDL license because you are transporting people to a public facility check out the requirements in your county and state to be sure.

No you don't but you have to take the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator's test. It involves you driving the ambulance backwards 400 feet. Parking, reversing, turning. If you apply to a private ambulance then have to certify you. But otherwise you use your regular Driver's license for driving cars.

If you live in California, you can go to the DMV and buy a "Ambulance Driver's Training Manual" for $5.
After you study that you need:
1) A DMV green card from your doctor saying that you are cleared to drive.
2) A set of "Live Scan" finger prints (They cost about $60-80 depending on where you get your hands scanned at)
3) and you need to be a EMT registered in a county

I am an EMT. To drive an ambulance you need to take a drving course but requires no special license. Depending on where you go you do need to be either licensed in CPR, MRT or EMT. Good luck...it's a great job!
