husband is in japan.
WE agreed he'd get $200/month.
he keeps overdrafting his checking account.
i told him that overdrafting is something irresponsible children do and if he needs more money, then we need to rethink his monthly allotment, but there's NO reason to overdraft.
i don't know how to get through to him....any advice.
i just need to figure out what's going on!!!
everytime he overdrafts, it's $20 pissed away!!!
uggghhh!!!!!!
thanks!

it's all base purchases, so he doesn't worry about exchange rates, and if he is in town, he knows the exchange rates!
i DO have a job and WE agreed on this amt of money. i'm fine if he needs more, but let me know, i'll deposit it, case closed...there should be NO need to overdraft.
i like the CO idea.

Open a second account in your name, and tell the bank that if there is not enough money to withdraw, then do not allow it. His ATM card needs to work like a pre-paid card. If no money in the account, then no money to withdraw and no overdraft fees. The bank should work with you.

First have him make out 12 checks for 200 each, with date in the future (assuming he will be there for a year, one every 30 days). These he can cash as they become mature. Then have him cut up and send you what ever he uses to access the account, be it either the check book or the ATM card.

See if your bank will attach the card just to one account like the savings. Then you could just keep $200 in the savings account and the rest in the checking that he wouldn't have access to.

Well if he keeps overdrafting, and its a recurring problem, why not just raise the allotment? He obviously needs/wants more money.

take his name off the account and just mail him his money in the form of money orders or travelers checks. If he gets mad just tell him oh well, you are obviously not responsible enough to handle money. If you cannot get his name off the account then close it, and open up a new one or just report his Atm card lost or stolen so he cannot use it anymore.

In all honesty, $200 in Japan doesn't go far at all. He needs more money. How much does he usually go over? Is there a predictable amount? If so, add that much to his stipend.

What do you get a month? 200 bucks a month just seems a little bit tiny to me... It sounds like the two of you need ot have a meeting of the minds on your finances. By the way, you need to get a job if you don't have one already. 200 bucks every month is really not enough in my book.

I don't like to advocate a threat, but you can tell him you are going to write his CO and request financial counseling.
$200.00 in Japan is rather paltry.
