More and more wineries are boxing their products these days. For one, the box prevents any light from penetrating into the wine to pervert the flavor (FYI: wines are bottled in colored bottles to inhibit light penetration). Second, it's cheaper to package - and third, it's better for the environment as the colored glass is more difficult to recycle and takes more energy to reform into new bottles.
Don't be too quick to judge someone drinking wine from a box - but at the same time, you shouldn't sacrifice your favorite bottle because it doesn't come in a box.

People buy box wines for different reasons, as you can see from the diverse answers that you are getting, so why not take the safe approach and treat each person as a unique individual? This is clearly not a good criteria for distinguishing people.
One fact is for certain. The chance for a "corked" bottle is negligible (not zero, as the cellar could be contaminated) from a box wine.
As a rule, though, the best of the box wines are on a par with very mediocre wines in bottles. You can also quite easily find really dreadful wines, either in boxes or in bottles. For myself, there are occasions for a fabulous bottle (the '96 Calon Segur is probably the best bottle in my cellar at the moment), and occasions for which a box wine will serve splendidly.

I am sorry but I really have to laugh at this one.. Especially the answer that mentioned the light in the refrigerator...I guess people that buy wine in boxes are people with wine in the refrigerator.
Sorry I rank wine in boxes up there with wine with screw top lids. People that buy them, I guess, just like to have a little wine, or maybe wine coolers and really have never experienced the true varients of the grape. Perhaps, it is like having a beer..a cold glass of wine. Wine kept in the refrigerator would all taste the same anyway. The cold on your tongue would prevent you from tasting the grape..except some white wines, but most refrigerators are too cold for them also.

If you order a glass of wine in a restaurant 8 out of10 times it comes from a box.it s way more convenient to have a box of wine in a fridge than to have 10 or 20 open bottles. the Elite wines are served only by bottle.no bar keep in their right mind would open a $200.00 a bottle wine and serve it by glass.and then stick it in the fridge hoping to sell the rest soon.
Ive tasted the same wines, boxed and bottled and found no discernable difference in flavor.
wine keeps better in the new packaging than in bottles.
It,s convenient for large parties and appropriate for informal dinners.
the packaging is recyclable.
my point is boxed wine isnt trailer trash anymore it can be the wise choice.

I make my own wine and put it into boxes. It takes less time and it holds more then one bottle so when I give them away the people who I give them to can enjoy more then one glass. I hate buying a $20 bottle of wine and only getting a small glass because the bottle of wine is small and i usually have wine in a group.

I drink boxed wines from time to time and to tell you the truth there really isn't that much of a difference, the taste is a bit different but it's wine.

I bet you haven't seen the new advertisements on tv. The taste of wine actually tastes better in box wines. The material that the box is made of actually prevents the flavor to change due to the light bulb in the refrigerator.
It really depends on what occasion it is. If you're having a formal dinner party, you might want to serve bottle wine.

Frugal wine drinkers.
I love all wine, the cheaper the better.
In France you can take your plastic container to a wine station, order red or white, get a handful of tax stamps and you're on your way to the party. Very environmentally sound.
Salud!

It depends. There are some good wineries making box wine now. But the people who buy a box of Franzia and proclaim how much they love and appreciate wine...not so much.
