You could slow down on the roads. And if you don't have 4 kids, ditch the SUV. I'm not a nature nut, but that drives the price up for everybody. I'm not suggesting a hybrid either. The cost of one of those cars would probably be more than the amount of money you'd save on gas. We do need conservation and more refineries though. Until we solve the gas problem, we'll just have to cut back spending elsewhere.

In New Mexico, we've been having the 2nd highest national gas prices other than Hawaii......and that's high!!
We've always had problems with high gas prices. The state govt even tried to find out why, back in late 80's,but the passed law had no teeth in it to make gas distributors open up their books.
The high prices in New Mexico is especially bad because this is one of the poorest states of the country. Heck....it's so poor, most of the illegal immigrants are choosing to enter the country thru Arizona, rather than here!!! [joke]
We even make the gas here, with couple refineries. Our state also has much oil production, especially down in SE are of state, near Texas oil fields.
So many of us feel we're being cheated by the high expense of our gas.
Oh.....yeah.......about $3.20 right now, but it's going up more.
Sadly, I don't think we'll see gas below $3/gallon anymore.
The immediate problem is that there aren't enough refineries to make gasoline or diesel fuel. The refineries still working are 30+ years old!!! New ones would have incredibly better technology to use!! No new refineries have been built since Nixon was president, and that's old!!
New refineries can be built with much better technology so they wouldn't impact the environment like they used to. It's the older generation which thinks refineries are evil and polluting. They don't understand how new 21st Century technology can prevent all of that.
With China becoming so privatized, they are demanding much more oil now, so with one billion people to satisfy, that takes away from the available world supply, thereby reducing any excess. So having more oil available would definitely help.
The thing is that certain media and political groups want you to believe that oil will run out in 10 or 20 years. That is completely impossible. Even with the world growing as it is. True, it can't last forever. But it doesn't have to.
Technology and science will eventually give us better ways of using energy and finding energy. But right now, petroleum is the only thing that can adequately give us the energy for us to enjoy our air conditioning, our retro Mustangs, our iPods, our trips to the mall, our way of life and freedom.
In another 20-30 years, we'll be looking at these fears that control us and laugh at them as wasted time and efforts.
The future is available to us, the future will be exciting for you kids. I've seen how things have changed from the 50's and 60's to now. We've go from simple muscle cars, getting 8 mpg, to a new retro Camero with 400 hp, and can get nearly 30 mpg on highway with new technology.
Give technology a chance. But in the meantime, we need to use the oil we have. Don't deny the future just because of false dooms-day prophets say the world will be destroyed by mankind in a couple years. The earth has been around for millions of years, and is incredibly much more tougher than anything we can do to it. It can adapt to anything. So don't worry that man is using its resources. That's why it's here, for us to enjoy its resources for our benefit, for our lives, and for our freedom!!

I just paid $2.84 yesterday when I filled up. I'm in NC. Gas prices are just ridiculous. It had gotten up to over $3.00 per gallon but started slowly coming down the last month. I wish I knew what we could do about it. If everyone would go a whole day without buying gas, that would help but try getting the U.S. to do that. I'd say we just need to keep complaining to our elected officials.

boston suburbs- lowest I have seen is $2.87 which is down from about $3.10 a few weeks back. What can we do....what can we do....no I have no ideas except don't drive a lot and walk more/use public transportation. A lot of people have great ideas about ways to fix this energy crisis but their concern isn't about the environment as much as it's so that they can still drive all they want alone in the car- only cheaper.

Its $2.81 cents here in Florida.
We could put a Democrat in the white house?
Or invest into Chervon gas company
because they just found the second largest oil well in the gulf of mexico. but they need funding to tap it.
Could bring prices down to .87 cents

Regular unleaded gasoline in Fenton, MI is $3.41/gal. And, yet again, Michigan has the highest average fuel prices in the nation at $3.375/gal.
I'm not sure what we can do about lowering the fuel prices, but I've certainly started driving less.
