Situation: I want to go to college and become a vet technician.

Problem: I am married(husband has great steady job) have a 5yr old son(starts school in august.), and the only college offering traning and diploma for vet technician are all at least 3 hours away.

I know i could go to a community college then transfer credit's, but i would much rather start of at a school specialized in vet technician coarses.

I know i may have to put off my plans for the better of my husband and child but i was just wondering if there were any suggestions.
or anyone who has had the same problem, who can give me advice.

p.s. i am not going to move my family away from our home just for my dreams.

Not sure where you're from, but where I live you can apply for a job at a vets and they send you to college one day a week, wages aren't great until qualified but its still national mimimum wage depending on your age.
Maybe you could write to a few vets and ask their advice?
Obviously if your husband is in a steady job moving is not an option so you would have to look at what is available nearest to you, if not look for a similar job with animals!

I am going through that right now. I have no desire to load my kids up and hubby to move 3 hours away. I am doing the next best thing and going to conmmunity college. It saves money ($109 percredit hour here/$189 at university not to mention the drive!!) I want to go to med school eventually but right now I am working on my associates in nursing. I have a 5 yr old, 6 yr old, and am 23 weeks pregnant. I will have a job when I transfer schools to get my bach. degree. You may just want to go ahead and take some classes at your closest CC. Once you get your english, math, etc. out of the way you will feel much better about going to the school hours away. Not to mention how many classes can you really take when its 6 hours round trip? Most hard to get into programs (nursing, lab tech, etc.) want you to have some college courses before admittance is your program like this?

You could check out on line courses. You could also see if there is something 3 hours away that your son could do that he could not do where you are. Therefore, giving him a chance he might not have. You could try and move 1 and 1/2 hours closer. I don't think Vet tech takes that long, so it would be temporary imposition for something you want to do. Sometimes you have to roll your sleeves up and dig in to get the job done. And your dreams are important too. Don't teach your children that you have to give up your dreams all together for others. Teach them to find a way to make it happen

Try an online college. One good thing with colleges, you can make your own schedule, so lets say the only option is going to that college 3 hours away, you can set up all your classes so it fits for one day a week (if you're willing to drive that far one day out of the week). But give online colleges a try. You can even call that college, or go there and talk to a councelor and they may be able to set you up with their own online classes.

Check out online courses from the university you want to go to. Sometimes they have learning extensions in smaller towns or the ability to work with local community colleges.
I take classes from a university 3 hours away online and if I have to take a lab I only have to drive 1 hour to the learning extension. It could be a possibility

well then do the obvious and go to community colleges and then transfer your credits . I think that would be the best thing for you right now since you dont want to uproot your family right now . btw I think it is great that you want to go back to school . good luck .
