The answer is actually rather simple. For fifteen hundred years the custodians of the English language were members of the clergy, for the simple reason that they were the only ones who could read and write. The language was propogated, developed and expanded by them because they were the only ones who could do it. Illiteracy was the norm until just a few hundred years ago, and universal literacy is so recent that in historical terms its impact on the language has been, so far, minimal.

Now the reasons women came off so badly in the way the language describes them is that their activities, individually and collectively, were being recorded and commented upon by a large group of celibate, politically ultraconservative males. They believed that every the Bible said was literally true, and the Bible has a lot of harsh things to say about women!

So, there you have it. Only over the past fifty years or so have we started to come out of the dark ages in terms of the way the language is used, and that isn't enough time to effect so significant a change.

What I always wondered is, how do men become studs and Casanovas unless there are enough slappers and slags to go around?

Because it comes from who is making the moves. If you go to a night club you will find that the guys are trying hard to talk to women and get constant knockbacks. If you are a guy and hit on ten women you can go home empty handed and feeling as though no one likes you. If a guy pulls everytime he goes out it shows that he is attractive and also a good talker. He can make people feel wanted and get them to go home with him at the end of the night. For a woman the whole system is different. A woman can get a date purely from looks and any woman can get a guy at the end of the night as there are so many of us who are rejected and desperate. For a woman there isn't much of a challenge in getting laid and all of you can do it with ease. Next time you're out try it. Go up to a guy and ask if he wants to go to your place for sex. It should be pretty easy to get a 'yes'. Then ask a male friend to try the same line on women and see how much abuse he gets. You may think that being called a slag is hard but try getting told to go f,,k yourself 20 times in a night due to trying to get laid.

Because people still teach their kids that no one respects a girl if she's too easy, but no one creas what the lads do. Even if a girl gets raped there are people saying it's her own fault. It's a man's world still and it sucks.
On the other hand, I did a my share of sleeping around when I was still single and it's never been a problem for me. I've been with the same bloke for almost 8 years now and have no regrets and I don't feel like I'm missing out on something.

It is only praised upon by other blokes and most of the time its just for face. I am a girly girl but have many many bloke mates as I have worjked in bars for years. Men use this to make them get attention look good in front of mates. if they are really sleeping about most of them are actually really lonely and looking for someone. Some people are just slags though. I know many... its pathetic really
I hate it myself. I find men who have been around yuk and wouldnt touch them . i like my man to not have slept with more than 10 or thats just ming.

Double standards! This attitude was the same when I was a teenager in the seventies and although it has changed a little it hasn't changed that much since then, girls get criticised, blokes get patted on the back. It makes me mad, how many people a woman chooses to sleep with is her business and it doesn't make them any worse or better a person than a man that does the same!

What is more unusual is that often women are the ones doing it. You only need to look here for a few minutes to see both sexes defending their genders as though it's some sports team. But when it comes to the stereotypes you mention women are very quick to call other women sluts and I can't actually recall having heard many men do it.

Yeah, double standard. But I see it a different way: instead of saying that guys should also be called manwhores, I think girls should be called pimpettes. It's basically the difference between seeing sex as a negative thing or a positive thing. So I ask: why the hell would you feel whoreish if you slept with loads of random girls? That to me sounds like a pleasant weekend. On top of that, COULD you sleep with loads of random girls? You haven't even slept with ONE yet. One step at a time, partner.

Its really horrible.
Same thing with virginity. Men are made fun of or not as praised if they are still virgins where girls are praised more for being pure.
My grandmother gave me a picture two years ago that was supposed to reflect women being pure.
Ummm... what about MEN? Shouldn't men be encouraged to stay pure too?
I don't get it.

It is a social injustice that has become what is widely known as a "double standard" for behavior and is gender specifically biased in favor of males because the male has one less bad consequence of sleeping around than does the female. He cannot become pregnant and his actions cannot be "visibly" identified. The female is quickly singled out because of her protruding abdomen in less than 5 months afterward, in every instance. Therefore society discourages that behavior in females with the name-calling but often praises males who get away with it. It is totally wrong for them to praise the same behavior that creates problems for females in males. However, because of the lack of social awareness and concern by many people, it is perpetuated. It is a social injustice on the same scale as racism and religious hatred.

i think thats the old mentality of womens sexuality and purity
truth is these days ppl rarely keep their virginity to marriage, guy or girl. but modern media, feminism and belief of gender equality have essentially evolved negative terms to have a slightl less negative connotation.

i know girls who are proud of their sexuality calling themselves hos and other such terms.

on the other hand men are not exactly praised. ive in fact been rebuked for being too horny and trying to hook up too often at parties. in the end its all irrellevant. sleeping around is just something common for ppl my age (18 or younger - early thirties). once they get the desire to settle down or commit, it all stops. if it doesnt, men are rebuked even harder than women for cheating in a relationship
