Looking at the records and driving skills alone why does everyone say that Dale Jr is a better driver than Gordon. I mean lets face it people, if his name was anything else he would just be another car in the pack. I just can't stand the fact that someone is called the best just b/c they are riding their dead father's name while the best "active" driver is hated by most of the fans. I mean what's up with that?

Please not that I said Gordon is one of if not the best "active" drivers. Dale Sr was a good driver but he is gone and his record could still be beaten.

Jr. fans will always hate Gordon because of Sr. When you look back on the history when Gordon was coming up in the nineties. It was constantly Sr. vs Gordon for the win. Truth be told, Gordon has never had a crash you to win attitude (just don't ask Rusty Wallace). Jr. has inherited alot of fans just because of his name. He has really yet to prove himself as a top driver and when he loses Bud as a sponsor maybe some of the Rednecks will fall off to.
He is popular because of name, image and sponsor only. Fans follow a dead legend and DEI and Teresa have cashed in on it. I think in the future you will find that DEI without Jr. will suffer before it gets better.
This is from a true Gordon Fan who likes all of Nascar, but lets face it you have to root for someone and because I never liked Sr. driving style everyone talks about his championships and wins but I wonder how many people he injuryed or hurt doing it. I think that if you were a Sr fan you should probably start rooting for Tony Stewart because he seems to have the same if I crash you it is racing but if you crash me your an idiot attitude. At least Tony has won 2 Championships.

I am a Jr fan and i have never said that he was better than Gordon. Gordon is a great driver and there are a lot of great drivers out there. Jr. is more fan friendly and as a member of Jr Nation we can relate to him. He is not phony or stuck on himself. He has the last name of Earnhardt, but he has not played on that. He had to work his way through the race tracks and work for what he has. He was never given anything, his father made him work for it, just like dale sr's father did to him. Yes we want to believe he is the greatest driver around but come on, we are not stupid. We back and support because he is a good driver and a good person.

Hemihead you said, "Keneseth is comparable to Jr. but nobody worships him. So it's all in the name." While I agree with what you are trying to say I would have to disagree with one part. Jr. is no where near as good as Kenseth, and I am not even close to being a Kenseth fan.
Then you said "Sr.'s records will be gone soon because Gordon is a so much better driver." I agree that Gordon is a better driver but he still needs to win a few championships to catch the Intimidator.
As for Jr. He seems like he would be a cool, down to earth, easy going guy. If personality is what drivers were judged on then I would say he is championship material. But Championships are based on your on track performances and with that being said Jr. will never be more than a mid to low level driver. A last name does not imply talent. For example look at Kyle Petty, a great guy who is almost always another "also ran."
If the tragic events at Daytona hadn't happened the way that they did, and the Intimidator just retired instead of passing away. Jr would be thought of probably the same way Kyle Petty is.

I have had to laugh when I see questions about who is the better active driver between #24 & #8. I'm not a Jeffy or Jr fan-it's Gordon hands down not even close.

Keneseth is comparable to Jr. but nobody worships him. So it's all in the name. And Sr.'s records will be gone soon because Gordon is a so much better driver. He doesn't have to run into others to win. He can really drive.

This is a great question. One that I'm sure most Gordon fans have asked themselves. Jr wouldn't have a fan base if Sr was still alive. The Sr fans hooked on to him because they didn't have anyone else to root for. Being at the races Sr fans or Jr fans weren't the friendliest. I'm not sure that's the fan base I would want.

Um... I don't know of very many people who believe that Jr is a better driver than Gordon. I am a Junior fan, but I know that Gordon is a better "all-around" driver. He can drive any kind of racetrack, road courses, superspeedways, short tracks, intermediates... he's won on all of them. He's a good driver, but the reason that so many people like Junior, is because they feel that they can relate to him.

A very very very small percentage of race fans actually believe that....
On the flip side I don't see how you can say Gordon is better than Dale Sr... Championships mean more to drivers than wins, and Sr is still 3 ahead...

I agree, Dale Jr is not a better driver than Jeff Gordon, just a more popular one. If his last name wasn't Earnhardt, he'd be as popular as Jeff Green or Scott Riggs. I do think Jr is a very good driver, but not a great one.
