Do the newcomers have a choice? What might aid immigrants to accomplish either goal?

I expect people who immigrate to this nation to embrace the culture and ideals of this nation and society. I do not expect them to continue to live exactly the way they had in their country of origin while being supported by the government. If they don't approve of the ideals or culture of this country then they can feel free to stay in their own country.

I expect them to learn to speak, read and write the English language. You can't be truly successful in this country if you don't speak English.

I expect them to abide by the laws of this country, even the ones they don't agree with.

I expect them to do the same things that immigrants to this nation have been doing for hundreds of years.

What we should expect is for immigrants to respect our laws and culture, quickly achieve functional fluency in our language, and become contributing members of society (though, really the last is something that can't be expected of /all/ members of any population). What we've come to expect from experience, of course, is quite the opposite.

Yes, immigration, itself, is a choice, and a momentous one.

Which two goals do you mean?

Assimilate and add to the community, pay their taxes, obey the laws, support America, speak English, don't be a drain on the community -- just like the people that are here!

If the new immigrants don't want to do this, why are they here? If they are still clinging to their former country, why are they here? Are they here for the freebies, like the illegals?

I'm not sure about aid for them. This is something they must do. It is THEIR job to learn English, get a job and make something of themselves. Our ancestors did this when they came here (legally).

I don't think you can fault someone for wanting a better life for their family. After all thats how we all got here. As for new immigrants, I think they should have to follow the laws of this country just like evryone else but we need to step back and allow them to embrace their culture also. I think everyone should be allowed to take pride in their herritage. No matter what country they come from.

As an American I expect any new immigrants to OBEY the laws of this land, to LEARN english, to assimilate into our culture and to not be on ANY taxpayer funded entitlement programs. My mother in-law did it so can any new potential immigrant.

I think that if an individual is making the effort to become a legal citizen then they are on the right path - then I would like them to speak to about 20 million others NOT doing the same thing.

I am Native American (Choctaw). Immigration in this country has often times been violent. Please remember what the Europeans did to the native population. So don't get all up tight about people coming over here and not killing everybody that lives here, destroying the food supply (buffalo). And setting up a policy of genocide to kill everyone that was here. No the current wave of immigrants are far better than those of the past. Most Americans should be glad that the current immigrants are not like there ancestors
