We aren't a race.
Second, it's not about being morally or spiritually advanced. It's simply because G-d said so. Now, I'm not standing up for their idea because as a Jew mine is different, but their reasons are different than the ones you listed.
The Jewish idea is that G-d originally offered the Torah to all nations, not just the Jews, but the Jews were the ones to choose to accept it--hence becoming chosen. The name stuck. And yes, G-d does love all people equally.

baz, you are kind of going off on several different directions.
I'll try to address your questions and back up the information with links to concrete facts.
First off, why not talk to your local rabbi and ask him or her for some insight into the meaning and significance of "the chosen people".
According to our teachings, God offered Torah (the five books of Moses) to all the nations of the world.
The Jews were the only ones willing to accept God's terms (refer to the 10 Commandments for these terms - actually, there are 613 Commandments, but that is another story).
See first link for additional information.
Genocide (or "genecide", as you wrote), probably has always been a plague upon humans.
Any time people of different race, ethnicity or religion meet, there will be fear, misunderstanding, lack of trust and hate.
This is what usually causes war and in some cases, genocide.
See the second link for some history on this subject.
"i would want no part in a god or religion that segregates his own people"
Let me explain.
It the early days of Judaism, when the rest of the world worshiped multiple idols and indulged in sub-human behavior, the "chosen people", with God's help, established a set of ethical laws.
Most of the world didn't want anything to do with the Jewish people or their laws and the Jews didn't want to be influenced by the evil behavior of non-Jews.
Your perception that today's Jews don't want any part of the world are based on ancient history.
As a matter of fact, much of the law used in today's civilized world is rooted in Torah.
See fourth link for details.
Finally, you write:
"doesnt god love all good people equally?"
Yes.
And what is unique about Judaism is that our belief tells us that God accepts ALL people of ALL faiths.
This is unique, even today, where so many in the Christian and Islamic faith say that ONLY their way is the right way.
Jews know better - God is bigger than just one religion, and ALL people are welcome into the Kingdom of Heaven.
See last link for details.
So, baz, does that help address your questions?

Baz,
They come from a religion that teaches them that they are the only chosen people of God and that he wants them to be separate and pure.
For 4000 years the God of the Bible, killed Gentiles, women and children and even livestock in some instances, because the Jews were to remain pure from non-Jewish defilement. They believe they are Superior because they are taught this by their religion. Just like Christians and Muslims and Hindus etc..
It never ceases to amaze me that Christians don't take the time to think about the change of heart God had to have gone through, to include Gentiles into his chosen fold, after killing them and ostracising them for thousands of years. Kinda makes him look like a fickle, mean deity.

Absolutely ! Our True God does love each and every human equally ! He has made all human persons EQUAL in spirit destiny potential on Paradise with Him !
God is no respecter or persons ! Never did He stoop down to a low, human made concept of a "chosen race".
Gal 3:28 is also very true in God and in His Spirit:
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond (slave) nor free, (as different, better) there is neither male nor female (at different spirit levels) for we believers in Christ are all One in Spirit in Him." (my slight amplification of the true meaning here; which Jesus gives me the spiritual liberty in Light and Life to do. Living Truth is ever unfolding in ever continuing Spirit Revelation.)
Today, all honest Jews should also know well that they are not the "chosen ones". They are now in a deep existential crisis; according to some Jews. Is a "real Jew" now, religious or secular? I agree more with the very religious and spiritual ones of course.
I do call everyone, good or average or bad, my true Brother or true Sister in the Living Spirit of our Master Jesus here.
Peace and progress into All Truth,
Brother Dave, a Jesusonian Evangelist and Theologian

So far docscholl has given the only correct answer. I'm always amused when non-Jews attempt to answer such highly Judaically-related questions. The concept of "chosen", as docscholl has noted, has been sadly, sadly misconstrued over the centuries; hopefully now you have a clear understanding.

In the Bible, God declares that the Jewish people are His chosen people, but I think he said that for a reason. (I have to look up what it was). I believe that God loves all of His children, who are called by His name, and that he segregates no one. As far as Him loving all "good people", Christ is the key. "No man comes to the Father except through Him"-John 14:6. Accepting Christ's ressurection is the key to eternal life with God. His ressurection isn't just physical. To me, that means that whenever I'm in a bad situation, breakup, job loss, etc., I know that I can rise from this and every bad situation to follow. Then one day, I too will rise from death and live with Christ.

Why are so many Christians and others wrong about this?
Paul showed this to not be so:
Paul:
Romans 2:28,29 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. (KJV)
------------
The Jews stopped being God's covenant people when Christ died. The proof was provided for the world to see when God caused according to Jesus own prophecy to destroy the temple. This destruction also destroyed the genealogical records on which the priests service depends.
The Jewish form of worship with temple, priests sacrificing animals disappeared forever then according to God's will showing that the new spiritual Israelite nation was the Christian nation of Gentiles and fleshly Israelite combined in the Christian congregation.

Since Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism, then yes, the Jews are still the "chosen ones" the 12 tribes of Abraham (which also includes Muslims).
Their god is not the divisive force, the people involved are. However, I'm with you on the "I want no part" portion of your question.

As I said yesterday, the Jews wrote the Old Testament and declared themselves the "chosen ones" and the Catholics wrote the New Testament and the Pope states they, the catholics, are the "true Christian Religion". Common Protestants, you better write a book or you will never be recognized.

Everyone is equal in G-d's eyes...no favouritism is intended anywhere. This whole chosenness just means tha the Jews were the one to CHOOSE G-d's word (it's believed that G-d arrived to the Jews last with His word after no one else would take it).
