Leaving for NY tomorrow. Want to see a Broadway show. My daughter suggests Chicago. Which is best? I will either try the TKS booth at Times Square or use Theatermania for discount tickets. I know A Corus Line may not have any available.
By the way she hates Wicked!

Just a note, my daughter is 17 (she'll be 18 in Sept.).

I'd skip Les Miz. Depending on your age and sensibilities you might not like Rent. I loved it but my mother thought it was "a rip-off of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar." Clearly a generational thing for her, and she also thought it was just too loud.

Chicago is probably my very favorite musical. If you love Fosse and Kander and Ebb and an overall great story, see Chicago. My only criticism is that I question the choices of some of the people they've had playing in the lead roles in recent years. I don't have any desire to see somebody like Brooke Shields in Chicago, or Usher for that matter.

A Chorus Line is a great, feel-good show as well. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the three but I would probably lean toward Chicago as a first choice and A Chorus Line as a backup.

A Chorus Line is amazing, and relatable, even if you're not a dancer. But there aren't really set changes, so you have to have a certain kind of patience and not be all about spectacle to see it. But the dancing is amazing! I thought the tickets were hard to get, but I've been hearing that they do show up at TKTS once in a while.

Chicago is pretty genius. It's very clever and makes a good point about politics. It's funny, and a little slutty, but not really in a bad way. The dancing is also wonderful in this. Chicago often has celebrities in the cast, but I don't know if there are any right now.

Les Miserables is very moving to a lot of people. It's a little on the long side though, and some people just find it boring. It all depends on how you take it. It's definitely a classic, and it's obviously good, judging on how long its previous run was.

Rent is amazing. It has something for everyone and can be very moving. It also has a day-of lottery for $20 seats for the first two rows! (as do quite a few other shows) Seeing Rent in the front row is amazing. There's no orchestra pit, so you're literally three feet away from the actors. And the music is so moving and inspiring. If you want to do the lottery for it, check http://siteforrent.com/intro.html. Your daughter would probably love it. And you too! (But I don't want to be too biased, she would probably love the other shows too.) And if you watched the first season of American Idol, Tamyra Gray is playing one of the main chracters in the show right now.

I guess it all depends on what you like. I suggest you go to Broadway.com and check out these shows, or listen to the cast albums or something to see which is your favorite. (Unless you already know all of these shows) If your daughter really wants to see Chicago, then maybe she would enjoy that more. Whatever you see, have a great time!

You are talking about old stand bys in all the musicals that you have mentioned. None of them have any of their original casts, so I would say they are all on par. I've seen them all and I don't think that there is one that is bad. You just can't go wrong. I would say the best thing to do is to go to the TKTS booth and go with an open mind. Let them sort of make up your mind for you. Your daughter wants to see Chicago, great choice, so go with that as your first choice and if there are discount tickets for that, it's a winner. IF not, work your way down the list. Remember that Rent is out as a movie with basically the original cast and is a fantastic movie, Chorus Line is a movie, but not great, Les Mis is not a movie, that may help in your choice a bit. Which ever you see you will enjoy. Have fun.

"Spamalot"!!!!!

She hates "Wicked?" WOW! That's surprising.

Depending on her age, if she is younger, then "Rent" might not be appropriate, as there is a lot of homosexuality and bisexuality in it.

"Chicago" is always good.

"Les Mis" is great, but is very deep and sort of depressing.

If she is old enough, "Spring Awakenings" just won all the Tony Awards. It is about teenagers coming of age and experiencing life. There is some female nudity in it in one scene (topless in a love scene) and I think a bare male from behind. But other than that, it is supposed to be spectacular, with great music.

"Chorus Line" is great music, but not much for set and action.

By the way -- the TKTS booth is not at Times Square, but a block west due to construction (at least it was a few months ago). During the week, most shows have half-price tickets available.

Chicago! My 2nd choice would be A Chorus Line, but it is really just a bunch of people standing in a line talking for a majority of the show, so you have to be really into it and patient.

She hates Wicked? Girl of know. :D I don't like Wicked, either.

Chicago is the best. I haven't seen Les Miserables, and Rent. . um no.

The one and only broadway production I've seen is "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." Good luck getting a ticket this late in the game, dear.

Anyway, Chicago should be fun. Although I don't know how Lisa Hamilton did it. .

What do YOU want to see?
