It's the perfect age to start. You're old enough to pay attention and practice on your own without being told repeatedly to practice. You're old enough that the instructor can actually teach you something without having to play childish games to entertain you.

Have fun and learn a lot.

No, not at all. I know of people in their '50s, '60s and even '70s who start karate. You're wise to start young, since, if you're healthy, you'll be in better shape and more flexible; but healthy people can do it at just about any age. It will be great exercise, discipline and a confidence builder. Be aware of a couple things: make sure you go to a reputable karate school (there should be no contact using kicks and punches, until you are almost a black belt (when you've mastered control of these techniques and are therefore not likely to accidentally hurt the person you are practicing with), and even then the contact should be light and controlled (and not to the head, groin, etc.). Also, as you develop confidence being able to defend yourself if attacked, be mindful that it's best to avoid dangerous situations, know your surroundings, run (rather than fight an attacker), if possible, and defend yourself when you have no other option (that is, you can't get away). Also, never use it as an aggressor; it's for defense. Knowing karate is beneficial, but it also carries with it certain responsibilities to use your knowledge and skills responsibly. Be safe and have fun!

No, it is not too late to start learning karate at 13. It is an excellent age to start. Any age is a good age to start. (Well, I think kids need to be at least older than 5 to start learning. Personal opinion and there are exceptions...)

Some people start earlier/later, but karate's success (as well as other martial arts) is measured on a person by person basis. So, don't worry about when you start or how long it takes to proceed through ranks.

Good luck with the class.

NO! It's never too late to learn karate. If you said you were 50 or 60 or any age I'd still say no. It's good to get out and give things a go. You will learn so many skills and karate is so great for fitness. Good luck and have fun ;)

My son is in Martial Arts and is 10, he started at 8. I think it is actually better to be older because I watch the way the younger kids learn vs. the older kids and it seems to that the older kids try harder and get more out of it.

Definitely not too late. I teach kung fu and have become a sr. black sash & I started my martial arts training for the first time at 25. So 13..... I think you'll still be ok.
