Both my brothers became eagle scouts. I don't remember getting them anything. Of course, this was years ago. I would get him a card congratulating him on his efforts. I know they have to accomplish a lot to receive that award! Best wishes!

Though I'm not knowledgeable on the Boy Scouts of America, I know in Canada gifts aren't usually given. BUT, I think they should be. These awards are a huge accomplishment! It's a lovely idea to give them a gift and let you know that you're proud of them.
Now, as for the gift, there are a number of things that would be appropriate in this situation. Boy Scout stores, if there are any in your area, carry an array of merchandise that could be given as gifts. There may even be an online site where you could order such things. If not, then you could look at purchasing something else wilderness related. If you're thinking of a really nice gift, an engraved bush knife would be lovely.
Best of luck finding a gift, and congrats to the recipient on a job well done!

A card of congratulations is really all that is needed.
I usually present the Eagle Scout with a pocket watch with an Eagle on it. The twelve hours on the watch represent the 12 points of the Scout law.
You can get him something functional with an eagle on it such as a key chain, money clip, belt & buckle.
You might ask his parents if there is a piece of camping equipment he needs.
Donate money to his Council in his name, and give him a card to let the family know.
The BSA has many recognition items at http://www.scoutstuff.org/BSASupply/SearchPage.aspx?page=LIST&free_text|=eagle%20scout&answers_per_page=15
but to be honest, the boy may not even use the items, or if it is a plaque or something, he will put it away and it will never be seen again. I do like the pen/pencil set, however I lost mine within six months.

I never heard of a need to send a gift for this type of accomplishment. If you do feel compelled to do so. Send a gift certificate.
