Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman’s Union in the process. The Mexican trucks, without the involvement of the Teamsters Union, will drive on what will be the nation’s most modern highway straight into the heart of America. The Mexican trucks will cross border in FAST lanes, checked only electronically by the new “SENTRI” system. The first customs stop will be a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, their new Smart Port complex, a facility being built for Mexico at a cost of $3 million to the U.S. taxpayers in Kansas City.

No, I'm not on the teamsters payroll, and never have been.
I thought I would just bring this up again, out of sight out of mind.

How long before lower paid Mexican drivers take jobs away from our independent truckers and smaller companies?
Not long I would expect.
How many illegal aliens will come across in those trucks? Plenty, I would expect. As well as drugs.
It will cost us. The effect will be grim.

Since the only people checking these trucks are Mexicans, there is no telling what will be in them. Bombs, drugs, more illegals etc. Not to mention the fact that this highway will be several football fields wide. Is this why Bush is so much in favor of eminent domain? Think of the people, hospitals, historical sites that will have to shut down. They certainly aren't going to go around them. It's amazing how they are managing to get this built, but can't get the wall done.

Damn. I live in Kansas City. I need to do some more research on this.

If this super-highway is anything like NAFTA itself, it will do nothing more than line the pockets of the already wealthy and put Joe American at risk for many other seen and unforeseen dangers.

Thanks for the "heads up"!

The average American has not faired well under NAFTA as was promised by legislators, we have record outsourcing and a massive amount of good jobs lost forever, however the rich get richer and companies continue to see record profit.

The middle class will take it on the chin in my opinion...

Depends on which end of the spectrum you are on, NASCO has billed itself the savior for the US, Canada and Mexico but I wonder who they are saving, the middle class worker or more profits for the elite. The delicate balance between allowing companies room to grow, advance, flourish and protecting our middle class worker has shifted in favor of big business and big $$ the middle class is now feeling the crunch........Just like NAFTA, time will tell.

I'm not a big fan of labor unions but I share your obvious concern about Americans losing EVEN MORE jobs to foreign countries. If this NAFTA highway works like the original trade agreement, forget about you or your kids having any kind of future.

I find it very very funny that this never has been addressed by any of the newspapers nor news stations in Kansas City. little odd indeed. By the way, this is old news to those that already knew.
