Which positions have more power, and what do they do? At least, where are each within the ranks of prison authority?

You really want to know? In my own personal opinion, Many of them , once inside a prison they have no hierarchy they act like dogs and try to be as cruel as possible. Probably the cruelest is the one who they see as the strongest. Inmates really paid they dues to society in two days . They don't need a longer time. This people have no compassion and they enjoy seen people suffering , I ask myself? who are the criminals there? the one who committed an offense or the ones who commits offenses WITH LICENSE.
Of course there are exceptions of a few prisons who really have supervision and rules for these workers.

Well those religions DO teach all human beings are equal (at least I think Judaism does) but their heirachies are based on knoweldge which is fair enough. Why should the ignorant of the religion be treated as equal to the learned when it comes to questions about religion As the Quran says "Are those equal those who know and those who dont know?" Where they err is in making the learned a priestly class - In Islam, their is egalitarianism, for example anyone can lead the prayer any can stand in the front row and pray- so a King will pray next to, or even behind a pauper

Nobody has guards anymore. They are called Corrections Officers. I believe a WARD is a group of cells. My guess is different states use different titles.
