Here is the full text of the new document that states nothing new: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20070629_responsa-quaestiones_en.html

Most Christian denominations believe that each of them is the fullest version of the Church of Christ.

While the Catholic Church also believes that she is "the highest exemplar" of the mystery that is the Church of Christ, she does not claim that non-Catholic Churches are not truly Christian. The Catholic Church teaches:

Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements.

Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church.

All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 819: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1sect2chpt3art9p3.htm#819

With love in Christ.

The pope is extremely delusional. He is simply following what he has been taught through the years by the former pagan organization call the roman catholic church. He chooses to ignore the history of the catholic church, a history that is well documented. The roman catholic church came out of the pagan Roman Empire. The first pope was NOT Peter for many reasons, one of which was the fact he was married. History documents that in A.D. 606 old emperor Phocus, who was himself a murderer and an adulterer, appointed Boniface III as the first pope. Note the date... AD 606. That is over 500 years after Christ established his church. The catholic church is NOT the church that Christ established and the pope is just a confused, false teacher.

If you want to see why the catholic church is not the church that Christ established, read the articles in the source.

If you are catholic and believe you can refute the evidence in the articles, please email me. Oh, and pass the articles on to the pope so he can see the truth.

I love how someone stated in this answer thread "The Pope is just a man"

As if that somehow negates that his authority has been handed down through Apostolic succession. Is he just a man? Why yes physically he is just a man. Does that mean because he is a man we should not listen to him?

Funny, the Apostles were also just men who wrote scripture, but people do not have a hard time following what they say.

The people listened to Moses, and he was just a man.

Basically Catholics follow the leadership of their Pope rather then the leadership of just themselves. If Protestants would not all appoint themselves their own Pope I bet we would have fewer Protestant denominations.

Also, anyone who says that the Pope is saying all other people from other religions are going to burn in hell are putting spin on what the Catholic Church is teaching. Do not believe such lies as they are only meant to further slander the Church. An insult against the Catholic Church is an insult against Christ himself.

Its funny. when Christ told the jews he was the son of God nobody believed him. People mocked him, spat on him and cursed him.

When the Catholics say that their Church is the one true Church, people laughed at the Church, spat on it, and cursed it.

Co-incidence? you decide.

The Pope didn't say anything new. He simply reiterrated the constant teaching of the Church, which is clearly supported by history. Further, He did not suggest that non-Catholics will "burn". In fact, he clearly stated exactly the opposite.

To respond to some of the misinformation posted above ... Simon the Apostle was indeed the first man to hold the keys to the kingdom, the universal symbol of supreme authority. And yes, this is clearly recorded in the Bible. Boniface III was the first pope? Do you know what "III" means?? :-) Yes, there were two other popes having the name Boniface, prior to Boniface III. In fact, there were 65 popes before Boniface III held office. No-one regards the pope as "godlike", though most popes have been godly men. Still, they are men, and sinners. But they are the sinners God has placed in authority over the rest of the sinners who make up God's Church.

Only the Holy Spirit baptism & fire. Burn in love of Jesus. My oil lamp is full.

The Pope is just wrong about this. But this is a teaching of the Catholic Church. So, just pray the Pope learn the Truth. Pray the Holy Spirit convict his soul to correct false comcepts in the Catholic Church. If so, I am sure 'great' will be his reward from Jesus Christ.

I heard this on our local news channel a few days ago.
It is really sad. My family is Catholic and I pray for them. I am so glad that God pulled me out of that System. If the Pope reads His Bible and I don't know if he does because the true church is not made from denominations but all those who put their trust in Jesus Christ and His work. Matthew 16:18, Ephesians 2:20,21

Are you kidding? I am a catholic, but not a practicing one. The church is a greedy corp. I pray right here at home. God is everywhere. Ever here the quote "lift up a rock,I am there. look in the sky,in the earth, all around you and I am there." I believe there is room for all peoples of the world, all religions, races, creeds in the afterlife.

Sorry, I beg to differ with the Pope on that declaration... I am not Catholic and I am not going to burn...I have been washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and sanctified by His Spirit and am Heaven bound... The Pope should not be so judgmental.

May I point out that Catholics added allot of things that aren't in the bible. Also, the Pope isn't in the Bible. Also, we all use the same Bible, so in any Church, there is a chance for truth.

No, you are letting the news commentaries tell you what the document says instead of reading the actual document for yourself. The document can be found at http://tinyurl.com/27hn45

Here is a real quote from teh document:

It is possible, according to Catholic doctrine, to affirm correctly that the Church of Christ is present and operative in the churches and ecclesial Communities not yet fully in communion with the Catholic Church, on account of the elements of sanctification and truth that are present in them.[

It follows that these separated churches and Communities, though we believe they suffer from defects, are deprived neither of significance nor importance in the mystery of salvation. In fact the Spirit of Christ has not refrained from using them as instruments of salvation,
