When you "float" scoops of ice cream in a liquid.

Rootbeer float is scoops of ice cream in a glass with rootbeer pour over them. The ice cream then "floats" in the rootbeer.

Coke float is the same. Substitute Coke for rootbeer.
A definite summertime treat.

That sounds almost like I make chocolate sodas. I use cola instead of the traditional carbonated water.

I put about 3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup in a tall glass and stir in 1 tablespoon of whipped cream and a 12 ounce can of colar until it's mixed well and foamy. Then I add a couple scoops of rich chocolate ice cream and put some more whipped cream on top.

YUM!
