Fellow Catholics and Christians. Given that it is widely believed by many of my brothers and sisters of faith that we follow god to avoid an eternal roasting in Satans parallel universe for the resurrected dead. And given that we couldn't possibly have missinterpreted the meaning of the original words which we replaced with hell. Please be so kind as to point out 1 verse in the old testament where avoidance of the eternal torture pit is given as a reason for following god. Perhaps a book by Solomon or several pages of the sayings of Moses would be justifiable given the gravity of the situation. But all I ask for is ONE VERSE.

Batgirl2good. A good find. Nonetheless I note the Catholic Encyclopedia doens't present the scripture and just points to a german book and an apeal to 'scripture mixed with "reason"'.
The second website seems to agree in the absince of an "eternal pit of suffering" reality and even points to the GREEK MYTHOLOGY it was based on.

According to this, Hell is not discussed in the Old Testament:

I am proud of you for you are beginning to question the falsity of "roasting and burning in hell fire forever".
I will keep this short, but "hell" is the common grave for mankind (Hades, Sheol). It is not a fiery pit where God would make us feel torture and burning forever. This is what the false religious leaders teach to scare the masses and scare them much of the time, into their false doctrine churches.
You can learn more at the link below. Just type in the search box [once you get to the page]: "What is hell".
It's so refreshing to see when intelligent people start to realize "Hey, there is something very wrong with this picture" and they question it and pray for guidance and for accurate knowledge from God.
Bless you. Continue to gain accurate knowledge. You will see that those that you always considered "Christians" were not. There are "true Christians" you know?

If you are a Christian, then the omission of something in the Old Testament is irrelevant. Although Christians believe in the Old Testament, the New Testament is the foundation of their beliefs. For Christians, the NT always trumps the OT. If you were speaking to a Jew that believed in eternal damnation, you might have a good point. Your argument is kind of like arguing in favor of old articles in the Constitution that have been canceled out by amendments.

There is no scripture that promises an eternal roasting, or any other eternal suffering. The "eternal lake of fire," or any other such terminology, does not suggest this at all. Understand that it is the fire that is eternal; and you should be able to figure out the rest.

I am not a member of your cult, so I am just putting these out there for your review. I suggest you get out while you can, but that's your choice.
Isaiah 33:14
The sinners in Zion are terrified;
trembling grips the godless:
"Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?
Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"
Matthew 18:8
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and
throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or
crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown
into eternal fire.
Matthew 25:41
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you
who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil
and his angels.

Its not in the Old Testament, and you know it. Christians believe that the New Testament is God's final say on matters of faith.
If you disagree, that's wonderful. There's no reason to try to discredit people's deeply held beliefs, or to try to pick a fight.
Sad.

Wont find it in the OT.....the concept is there. What happened to Israel any time that they strayed away from the commands of the Lord?
However Jesus compared eternal damnation to a place where there would be "weeping & gnashing of teeth"
Eternal damnation is very real..........so I pray that you're saved.
