The marketing concept states, in short, that business exists to serve people and solve their problems, expand their possibilities, etc. not the other way around.
The question "can we" never trumps "should we."
The consumer is the focus of the marketing concept by definition- consumers make the market, which is what you "ing" when you're marketing.
If you're asking a question from a homework assignment, then the right answer will be in the context of what they tell you. Not us. Just in case, you know =)

an engineeringly wonderful or even innovative product that fails to meet consumer needs probably won't do very well.
Case in point --- the MacIntosh operating system was, for years, way ahead of DOS in terms of operating convenience. However, since the Mac was much more expenisive than a PC, DOS ended up getting about 90% of the market.
Consumers turned out to be driven by their thin wallets.
Make sense?

It is a very good question and the heart of business and marketing, and how the world is run.
Bernard hayes, who is the brother of Freud - the famous author about physcology, human behaviour. Marketing started years ago, from Bernard Hayes who used his brothers idea, thoughts, philosophies.
What are these thoughts, knowledge that now, created what we call Marketing and also Public Relation?
Bernard Hayes realised that to control the masses, one must understand the needs of the people. But he was not compassion. Not from a long shot. He used his brother's work to manipulate people.
Years ago, when smoking for women was taboo, he was approached by a cigarette company. The company wanted to sell its product to women and wanted to raise the sales, turnover but they just didn't know how. Also because smoking for women was a tabbo at that time.
So Hayez said ok and began to create what would make him a lot of money because his idea would work and many companies would come to him and he would set up not just a marketing company - but government's would hire him to control the masses.
He hired loads of women. Got them to have cigarette packs underneath their clothes, just on the side of the legs, right near their private parts. On that day, President Roosevelt was doing a speech and there were thousands, and thousands of people.
As people walked by, these women then were ordered by Bernard to open their jackets, to show their long legs, take out a cigarette, while OTHER women watched. And...light up and smoke the cigarette.
He then called newspaper reporters saying, "lots of women are smoking" so reporters came flooding to him. And he was ready. He had it all ready - the right sentence, the right words, to blend in with the DESIRE of the women.
The women in that time and even now look at INDEPENDANCE, FREEDOM, and become EQUAL to men. And when reporters asked Bernard Hayez the question he said, while a woman opened her long coat, to show her legs, and take out a cigeratte, light it and raise it up in the sky...
"Women want Freedom. This is the torch, the light of freedom."
That was it. It was in the newspapers. It was on TV and the cigeratte companies turnover, their sales rocketed high and it still does today.
He went even further. He created the not just a company but the concept to make America a capitalist, business nation but creating a desire in which - people didn't buy what they just wanted to use but got them to keep buying. Hence, the government needed this to get the economy growing fast.
It worked.
Then, he hired actresses and actors who are well known, to smoke in movies. These were subliminal messages to women and youths, men too. If you look at a lot of the old movies, you'll see many bad dudes and sexy women, smoking cigarettes. That was a marketing compaign, by Bernard Hayes.
Now, this thinking was really behind a dark thought, that human beings do not know what is right and wrong. That the masses can be controlled. It was until one thing changed. The changed of deep thinking within Marketing.
What we now call Statistics. All Marketing companies do this today. They hire people to get statistics, or they get them out in the streets to ask consumers about what they eat, drink, what clothes they, what think of this drink or that, do they work, how much they get paid, and all the questions for "MARKET RESEARCH."
Roosevelt felt this was the best way. To not see human beings as animals of just their desires but to realise, they CAN make their own DECISIONS.
Roosevelt was against what Bernard Hayez was doing but then the Recession kicked in, the Economy of USA has colllpapsed. So Bernard created a massive campaign and an exhibition of the future - like a massive Museum, an interactive museum of the lastest technology to show, that it is not POLITICS but BUSINESS that makes the world go round.
Thousands of Americans came. And that's how he won the people back and suddenly, his aim was achieved. People started buying even though they already got clothes. They bought new ones because some star bought it. They kept buying cosmetics even they got bag full at homes. People today, still go window shoppping and suddenly buy what they don't REALL NEED but that is because Bernard Hayes understood about...
Creating a DESIRE. And that's what Marketing is about. Looking deep into the mind, the desire of a human being, and get it to be attracted, to want this or that product. This can only be done by thorough study of the CONSUMER.
Their location, their buying habits, questions after questions.
Hence, this is the real and TRUE reason why companies all over the world, to magazines, to cosmetic companies, to cars, to clothes focus on the marketing concept of understanding the Mind and Desire of the CONSUMER.
One last thought. To show how this worked. Bernard Hayes created Fashion Manipulation by hiring women, with all those fancy clothes to talk on TV on how clothes:
1. Tells a person what you are.
2. The colours and style shape your character and personality.
3. That it reveals you and liberates you.
He did what here? He worked with the DESIRE of the women. He used professionals to look into the minds of the women and also used his brother's work.
And not many people know this and when you do, it really helps you to understand why marketing is important but it is also not about the products. It is...
1. Aligning your products to the Needs of the Consumer.
That is why, companies do not produce products first. They look into the needs of society. The companies that do this become Billion dollar companies.
And BILL GATES to Warren Buffet understood this.
