Sometimes i remember stupid things i did in the past and i get so disturbed by it i cringe and feel compelled to physically distract myself by muttering to myself or jerking suddenly to one side or smirking, groaning etc. Obviously i end up looking really weird, which i think about even more. It's a vicious cycle. I've tried writing these memories down, and it does help, but they still happen and it really affects me. Has anyone had similar experiences? How do you deal with the problem?

I have reacted physically when remembering things, both good and bad...Like cringing when I remember something really embarrassing, or smiling and shaking my head when I remember a fun night of passion etc. It is normal and not a "problem". It is human to have emotional and physical reactions to these things!

I've cringed when I've thought of awful things I've done. You're not weird, you just have a conscience. A good thing to do is to wait until you are in a safe place, maybe at home? and punch a pillow, or scream into a pillow (even if only silently!) Let yourself writhe with embarrassment until the dreadful feeling has gone. AND remember you are not weird, we all do awful things of which we're embarrassed and ashamed. Just imagine that those things were done by a young inexperienced person (They probably were actually!) and think about how kind you would be to that young person if you knew how they were feeling about what they had done.
It's probably better to twitch, mutter and groan when you are alone and can do it freely!! You're not alone..Forgive yourself and learn from your mistakes. All the best.

Whenever I have a bad memory I want to cry and I cant breathe so if I am at work i have to leave the room so I can let the memory pass. Its good that you are having the memories because your brain is trying to sort things out. Best to learn from these experiences. Know that you dont have to do those bad things anymore because you already know the outcome and how it makes you feel. If the memories are bad enough try talking to someone about them. You might also find some of them arent entirely your fault.

Yep. I've had them. It's called "regret" and it's normal. To deal with it, instead of trying to distract yourself, think through the whole situation. Try to find the humor in it. Remind yourself that everyone does stupid stuff and you're no better or worse than the rest of the human race. "To err is human". Congratulations. You're a human.

You are too weird for words. Start taking drugs and drinking a lot.

You're better than I.
I even forget to cringe.

What's the subject again?
