Today we had a University Open for Arts and Humanities. We were at a Classics lecture and the lecturer had to bring his 5year old daughter with him.

Anyway, we thought she was pretty cute at first. She was the clicker for his Powerpoint. But the she got bored and started drawing on the whiteboard.

She started drawing this person, then she drew a noose around it's neck and wrote above it, " I will hang you all" and "I want your blood".

Her father was quite shocked. He was quick to defend her and was very worried.

We left the lecture quite scared.

How on earth could a 5year old know about this stuff?
(Don't give me any Satanic answers please)

I'm not worried about her coming after me or anything. I just want to know where on earth she would get these ideas. I didn't know about this stuff well into my teens.

With the way the media focuses on negative things that happen in our society and constantly force negative images of certain events on us day after day it would not be surprising if she saw it on the news while her parents were watching. Also the checkout lines of the grocery store with all the tabloids and magazines. Daily newspapers had images of Saddam on the front pages for days! Thats without even mentioning video games and older siblings. Children are very astute and pick up way more than we think they understand!

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks we had to stop watching the news when our children were around (even though we thought they were playing) because they were having terrible nightmares about prople blowing up our house! While the news certainly has a place and is good for children to learn about current events in history it can be too graphic and too much negativity.

Just my 2 cents :)

Well she could have learned it from her brothers and sisters. I know almost everything bad I learned when I was little was from my sister and brother! lol. She also could have watched a movie about something morbid while her parents were away. Or if could be learned from her friends at school. It could be the thing everyone in her school's talking about! To her it shouldn't mean much...when I was in kindergarden I didn't even know what hang (noose around neck) meant. So don't worry too much over it.

Too much inappropriate television, too many comic books and hanging around with older kids are some of the ways she could have learned this stuff. Did someone take her to see the Pirates of the Caribbean movies/ That's another possibility. I wouldn't read too much into it. Sometimes kids that age just like to shock.

TV, video games, peers in daycare, any number of places in this day and age. The good thing is, her father was concerned and hopefully he'll discover the source and elliminate it if it's an ongoing thing.
Don't give up hope for the future generations.

That sounds pretty disturbing...

The effect of television and video games?
Maybe she has an older brother who plays video games or watches movies with references to hanging.

Just a guess.

With all of the violence you see in the cartoons etc on TV and the media, it isn't surprising.
