Whole-grain. You have to look at the list of ingredients to know if it really is whole-grain. Some packaging will say it's "whole wheat" but the ingredient list will say "enriched-blah-blah-blah". Look for one that doesn't say "enriched" in the ingredient list. And try to find one that has at least 3 grams of fiber per slice.

For ordinary off the shelf run of the mill bread, white is the poorest, wholemeal is better (not just brown), then wholegrain. Try ones with added seeds to slow the digestive transit (lowers the GI/GL load).
