My two-month old terrier pup has this problem where sometimes he gets stiff all of a sudden and just shakes. When this happens, he can only lie on his side and is unable to move. Then his four limbs shake. One time while this happened he wet himself. He didn't used to be like this. Now lately. he can't even walk properly. He'll take a few steps then fall as if he is dizzy and the ground is moving. What is causing this and how can I help him??
Thanks.

Yes, I did inquire about that from the vet. But the she said, that it is probably something bad he ate or chemicals he smelled. And to make sure he drinks a lot of water/milk. But this is not very efficient seeing as he still has several of these attacks in one day.

You definitely need to make a trip to the vet soon. It sounds very much like he is having seizures, though there are any number of reasons why this could be occuring- epilepsy, liver problems, diabetes mellitus, poisoning, etc. A large number of these are treatable. It may be something that your local vet can work up themselves, or you may wind up needing to see a specialist.
The best thing you can do for him when he has these episodes is to make sure that he is not near anything that he could hurt himself on, but don't get yourself injured...seizuring animals can bite quite badly just because they can't control their jaw muscles. He is probably not aware of what is happening to him during the seizure, but will need your reassurance once he starts to come round afterwards.
After reading your update, it sounds like he may be epileptic, and that you are not getting anything like the sort of assistance you need from your regular vet. One thing you have not mentioned is how long he's been having these episodes for. Also, if he is having seizures lasting more than a short period of time, you should take him to an emergency clinic if it is outside normal clinic hours...prolonged seizures cause the body temperature to rise quite dramatically, which can lead to brain damage & damage to other organs.
Good luck, and I hope you get an answer to your pup's problems. Please drop me a line if I can be of any more help :)

There are two possibilities here. It could be low blood sugar. If your puppy is conscious, try giving him some honey if you have nothing else. Nutri-Cal, Nutri-Stat, Nutri-Drops are all made for this problem and available at most pet stores. The Nutri-Drops are very good because they are easy to use and get straight into the blood stream. Three or four drops on the tongue are all that is needed. If your puppy starts shaking or acting spacey, give him something right away before things get any worse.
If you cannot get anything into your puppy, you MUST get him to a vet. Seizures can cause brain damage. Let's hope it's just low blood sugar.

it definately sounds like your pup is having some kind of seizures.
Do you know of any head type injuries???
Could he have jumped off something even when you weren't at home??
It could be epilepsy whicha vet would have to determine and I would find another vet if the one you have been to that said give it water and milk. If it is epilepsy there is meds for that.
Or it could be low blood sugar.
First try getting karo syrup and you put a tablespoon in a pint of water and give that to him as his drinking water this can help to prevent teh low blood sugar. if he has a seizure put about a 1/4 teaspoon of karo syrup or honey directly in his mouth. If you can't get karo syrup fro the water you can use honey but the karo is better.
If you have any more questions or need email me at kathy_decaprio@yahoo.com
I would like to know how he does if you don't mind

My dog has EXACTLY the same thing. We went to the vet and they werent sure what it was, they said it is probably a form of epilepsy.
When that happens all you need to do is leave the dog where it is...do not attempt to move it, and just sit with the dog, pet it and reassure it.
It will pass in a few minutes and then your dog will seem as good as new.
dont stress about this too much, my dogs gets it every couple of months, shes a spaniel, and i know lots of dogs with the same.

You need to take him to a different vet. Your vet is not qualified or interested in diagnosing him properly.
"probably something he ate" is not an appropriate response to your concern.
Get a new vet and take care of your puppy.

How much does he weigh and how much does he eat?Sounds like a possible case of low blood sugar, triggering a seizure.Small dogs are more prone to this.Need to make sure he is eating ONLY dog food and enough of it to keep him going thru the next meal.Need to have a bottle of Karo syrup on hand, and rub some on his gums next time he has an episode.Good luck!

GO to the vet ASAP. He could be having seizures and this can cause damage each time it happens. Don't wait.

It is difficult to tell from your description, but it is possible he is having seizures. You should have him examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
