souls are like the planets which revolving around the sun but souls revolve around god-cosmic energy and their ultimate destination, like the planets, is to merge into their sun.
all souls are thus interrelated. souls are not only of men but plants and animals and all other living things from the unicellular animal to the multicellular human. every living thing breathes even plants do. as per their souls progression these are divided into levels. human occupies the 7 th level and the grasses etc from the plant kingdom occupies the 1st level. animals as per their progress are in the 5-6 range. we all have to survive and it would be better to eat something from the first few levels rather than from the 5-6 th level. that is why the saints advised satvik food, it would be the best for the enlightenment route.
furthermore, the body of humans is not for partaking of fleshy foods. the teeth are not like those of animals as humans do not have to tear at the food. the saliva is alkaline and not acidic as in carnivorous animals. the stomach lining is not as hard as that of carnivorous animals. the long intestine system is for digestion of vegetarian foods.
however, in cold areas, where there is less grown of plants, such food is necessary for survival. it is however be taken in limitations to avoid ill effects on karma and health..

Let us assume a soul is like a chip in a mobile phone or even a battery (any battery) which has no gender (m/f). Since it has no gender it is assumed to be positive. Without a battery no car can move and it becomes a white elephant.
In the same way it is only when a soul enters the body ( the womb of a woman) that it becomes a human being. As soon as the soul leaves the body it is said to be a corpse. We don't have male souls and female souls just as we don't have female batteries or male batteries or female cars or male cars. A car is a car.It is the role that the soul is to perform that underpines whether or not one should be in a male body or a female body. This means that God did not create a white man or a black woman nor did He create souls. Souls are imperishable and as souls we are all brothers. We become brothers and sisters when we are in the flesh but the engine/battery/soul that drives the flesh/body is positive. It has no gender nor religion but adopts the religion of the parents. Yes, I am a christian because my parents are christians and could have been a moslem, hindu or whatever if my parents belonged to that group. So religion is man made and not of God.However, the religion of God is PEACE which is an embodiment of the soul that you are.You are the exact replica of God. As the Father so is the son. God is the Supreme Father, the Supreme Soul and the Bridegroom and all His children(brides) are souls- bodiless beings. Originally, we were bodiless but we need a body to play our part in the drama which is why we came on earth to take bodies in the bellies of our mothers.
Do plants have souls? No plants have no souls because a soul is a miniature of God the Supreme Soul.Besides, a soul is an embodiment of the mind and the intellect for which we can reason, think, plan et al. The question is : Do plants and animals have conscience or intellect and mind? Can they reason, plan and think for the future?
As regards the eating of meat most religious groups frown on it for good reasons. The truth is when anything dies or is killed it is buried. It is not eaten and the stomach is not a cemetry for dead things. Moreover, it is said that 'you are what you eat' because what one eats has a lot of influence not only on ones mind but on ones nature and attitude. Perhaps, it would be better if we could eat fruit and vegetables for healthier bodies and not dead carcasses. More importantly, the more reason why we should refrain from eaten meat is the fact that in heaven where God is preparing for His children, the atmosphere there is not that of sorrow or pain where one kills to eat but that of non-violence. You will see the lion and the lamb eating and playing together. Nobody attacks the other for food and nobody kills to eat. There is total and complete happiness and freedom for all and everybody there is a vegetarian or fruitarian. Since humanity is feverishly preparing to go to heaven the land of happiness it is about time we stopped eating meat because nobody will kill an animal for food. That is not the law.
I know that one of the injunctions in the scriptures is that 'thou shall not kill' but today man not only kills animals for food but man kills man for food or in the name of religion. It is a wonder!Again, the law is that we should not give sorrow to one another either in our words, thoughts or deeds and we should also not accept sorrow from one another. So by killing animals to eat and shedding blood we are becoming violent and by so doing sending impure vibrations into the atmosphere. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why natural calamities are rife in the world today.

To satiate ones own hunger, killing an animal or destroying a plant is not treated as sin. There are several Upanishad stories narrating it.
In spite of it there were some people who lived by collecting the fallen grains and surviving on them. Both Mahabharata and Bhagavatha narrate about such souls. Therefore one has to decide what type of life he wants to live.

If you can save your life by avoiding meat, then you must not eat meat by killing your brother souls. Animals are quite developed form of life just a little less developed than us. You can see it tremble, cry, weep, love, fondle, and wrinkle in pain and agony. Even after seeing all this if we kill to eat I have nothing to say. All saints have exhorted people not to kill animals and birds for food and taste.

Yes, but most people do not follow shastras, they are vikarmis, karmis or vikarmis, they are all on the platform of sense gratification, therefore are sinful.

Instead of brother and sister I would say that we are part of the same manifestation but unless one realizes there is no conviction and once one realizes then he/she cannot kill because soul cannot be killed.
