ok
my dog is a border collie x kelpie
8 years old
very cute
anyway,
i just noticed a few days ago that he is starting to bit his nails.
i've cut his nails, but he still keeps chewing on them and sometimes the skin around it splits and starts to bleed.
What can i do to stop him from doing that?
and what age do border collies/kelpies live up to?

My guess would be that the dog is bored. If it is walking and stops to chew its nails, it might be something else - but if it does it while its lying around, it's likely just boredom. You might try getting it a 'hard' chew toy, and then getting it excited about playing with it. You have a working dog, and it should have a'job.' If it doesn't, it will tend to seek activity of some sort.

Unlike in people nail biting is not a habit for dogs. Usually when they do this it is b/c their feet itch. First thing that comes to mind is allergies. They will also lick or chew feet and nails if their feet hurt. He needs an appt with the vet. If you let this go he may chew until he develops an infection where the skin is opened up at.
Best of luck

My dog tended to bite his nails alot and i wasn't sure what to do. A dog's nails should be no longer than the length it takes for them to just touch the ground. If you have them any longer than that then the dog may have a tendency to bite them. Although if you have cut them fairly short and he still continues to bite them i would consult your vet. Chew toys are a good idea to distract the dog from biting his nails. Also if it starts to bleed it may be because nails contain blodd vessels and nerves which your dog may have bitten into.

Hope thats helped.

Our Border Collie lived to 9.
I'd check with the vet that your dog hasn't got any irritant causing him to bite at his nails, has he been walking on or near any different grasses, has he got an infection, or maybe some kind of parasite?
Either way it wouldn't hurt to check with the vet, he also could have Mange.
Good Luck. ♥

This is not an uncommon habit. You can but products at a pet store which taste bad, to put on his paws. You can also put alum on his paws, which is found in the spice section of a grocery store. Alum tastes horrible. Good luck. Oh and hot sauce most likely will not work. Most dogs like it.

first of all, you must take him to the vet asap! could be: fleas, irritation, and worst of all, big chance it could be a skin innfection causing pain which makes the dog bite, to stop this itch/pain
