ply kids with endless biscuits and chocolate, tutting at the mother who says 'they're not allowed', then in the next breath tell you how to feed them healthily and how to punish by with-holding treats!? Also, they preach about the best way to discipline, doling out the knowledge, then completely undermine you when you actually do it! Weird.

Anna B, my mother is exactly the same! As soon as I say something to my kid, she's telling me off. She's a social worker so she harps on about the 'damage' I'm doing if I'm firm, and the 'damage' I'm doing if I'm not firm! You are right, they doesn't know the where the lines are. Glad it's not just my mother!

Yes ! My mother actually tells me off in front of my kid whenever she disagrees with what I do or tell my kid. My kid goes to my parents whenever he knows that I will not give in to his demands. Whenever I'm alone with my kid I drill it into his head that he must firstly listen to me coz I'm his mother. The way I see it at the moment is that my mother does not know the lines between being a mother and being a grandmother.

Yes it's annoying isn't it?! They seem to do this to get favouritism - love me cos I'll spoil you with all the sweeties you want!

My little cousin returned from my grandparents after being looked after by them in HK for a few years and my little cousin had only black stubs for teeth! My grampa bought him every sweet he wanted and cos my cousin didn't like brushing his teeth, my grampa let him off with it!

I think many grandparents are afraid they will miss out on their grand-children's life if they don't spoil them, the children won't remember them or be scared of them, or won't ask to see them.

I find that many grandmothers are very interfering when it comes to a young mother bringing up children. They practically grab the baby off you when they cry, I've even had my hand slapped for doing something a different way from my other half's grandmother!

All you can do is smile nicely and say that they are only allowed one treat a day, or you could say too many sweets give them a sore tummy at night! Another excuse is that children go hyper on the colourings, those excuses usually work.

Have fun and smile nicely, we'll all end up grandparents one day!

When my little one was 4 months old, my mum gave her a ice lolly to suck and some chocolate. Needless to say I freaked out! Now she is a bit older (14 months) we try to give her as much fruit and healthy food as possible at home and treats are for when she visits granny.
We have also since then set some rules like no fizzy drinks etc. But I agree, they do always try to dish out conflicting advice ...bless them...

Because they like to spoil their grandchildren on one hand, but then on the other they want to appear to know best regarding discipline & diet. I have been so lucky with both sets of my boys grandparents because thay have never done this.

Hehe... so glad I'm not the only one!!!!

My mother in law will tell me and my partner to discipline our children (who are not particularly naughty) - but if they misbehave when she's sitting for us - they get away with anything!!

Oh well - we'll get our chance to be annoying when we're grandparents!!

lol! just had this discussion with my mother in law, she smiled and said its a grandparents perogative.
make sure your child knows this only happens at grandma's and at home there is not an endless supply of biscuits!

because they went through it with you and your grandmothers so it's their turn to do the same. they like that they don't need to be the bad one dishing out the disipline, the can bribe the kids to like them with sweets etc and comfort them when you tell them off.
it's just the way it goes! :) you'll be able to do the same when you have grandchildren!
