My blue heeler delivered a litter of 6 healthy pups on 7/7. The puppies are all healthy and thriving.

Today was the first day I didn't stay with the dog and puppies all day, and a few minutes ago I came into the living room and found 2 puddles of vomit, poop in one spot and diarrhea (big puddle) in another spot. There's also mess on the couch in three spots; they're orangey-yellow, not brown like the diarrhea or yellow like the vomit.

This is totally out of character for her, and she was fine yesterday. She ate all her food when I fed her, she's had plenty of water, and is not acting sluggish.

Is it normal for a dog to get sick like this a few days after delivering, and to act oddly? It's 5:20 in the morning so I can't get her to the vet for several hours, and I don't know if I should separate her from the puppies long enough to take her in even when they open.

I spent 45 minutes looking for help online, nothing. I don't know what to think or do.

Help!

I know she hasn't gotten into anything funky; she's been with the puppies all day except for going outside, and when she's outside I watch her the whole time even though we have a fenced-in yard.

There are other dogs in the house, but no sign of illness in them.

Don't hesitate to take her to the vet. In fact, check your phone book to see if you have an animal emergency room nearby. (Most urban and suburban areas do.) If so, they usually will answer questions over the phone, unlike human hospitals.

The diarrhea is not uncommon. Mine went in the livingroom, also. Ugh! But she never vomited that I know of.

Meanwhile, just give her lots of extra hugs and praises. She is probably expecting to be scolded or punished and that will only make her more nervous and more likely to go again. Let her know that YOU know she is trying her best.

Oh, you might want to show her where she CAN go in the house if she can't wait for you. Mine learned to go in the bathroom or near the back door. At least that way they I know they tried and they know they won't be in trouble.

So check the phone book. Talk to the vet. Take good care of MaMa and those new puppies.

If she's had a lot of the placenta, then yes, it's perfectly normal. You should have taken her to the vet for a shot to clear her out in any case, and for the puppies to be checked for any abnormalities. She is bound to be a bit loose for a while however. I'd put her back on her usual food, with added protein (eggs, boiled chicken etc., if you feel it's necessary). Wet food can go straight through some dogs and a switch at this time she does not need.

You should take her and the pups into the vets for a after whelping check up anyway. Some dam's will experience vomiting and the runs after eating all the after birth and placentas from the pups. It is within the normal but you should still have her checked to make sure she hasn't retained a pup or not expelled all her Placenta's. Don't get to worried until your vet tells you to ok.

Good luck!

Not normal at all. She needs to see the vet in case she's gotten an infection. The pups should go with her to the vet visit in case she would have to stay for anything. She should go ASAP, you don't want her health failing while the pups are depending on her too.
Best of Luck.

Sounds like she got ahold of some bad food. Do you think she could have been poisoned?
You need to take her and the pups to the vet.....what ever is making her sick, she is passing to pups thru the milk.

calm down. take her to the vet as soon as it opens. take the pups with her. never separate the baby's from the mom. the vet will also check the baby's while they are there. good luck.
