A few months ago my fiances mom was having trouble with her boyfriend, they were breaking up and she thought he was being mean to one of her dogs, so we brought him to our house for a few weeks, well when we took him back, her pit bull didnt want the dog back in the house, they fought REALLY bad, like bloody bad, so we decided to keep him, he is a really good dog except he pees EVERYWHERE and poops everywhere, I dont know what to do! I have tried rubbing his nose in it and sticking him outside, its just not working! My fiances mom use to put papers on the floor for him but i dont really want to do that, i could put them in the basement but I would really rather not, my other 2 dogs are potty trained and i dont want them going on the paper too. I cant get rid of him so that is not an option, I just need some way to potty train him. Any ideas? Please help!!!

How old is this dog? You really need to be preventative with the peeing and pooping. You need to take the dog out before it goes in the house so it does its business outside. Once the dog goes outside, praise him a lot. Your dog depending on the age may have to go out every hour or two. So, take it out frequently throughout the day. Also after lots of drinking or eating the dog will most likely have to go. Rubbing his nose in the stuff doesn't help at all b/c the dog really has no idea what you're doing, they can't reason like humans can. He just thinks you're punishing him, for what , he won't know. Just take the dog out constantly. It'll be a pain in the butt, but thats how its gotta be when training a dog to go outside. Also, if you're just throwing the dog outside you can't praise him if he actually does go, so he's learning nothing. Walk him on a leash when you take him out and make sure he actually goes before letting him back in.

By sticking his nose in it you are not affecting anything, the dog has no idea what your doing that for Always make sure you take the dog outside 20 minutes after eating and drinking. - don't have water on the floor all the time, put ice cubes in the water bowl so it can quench it's need for water , each time he potties outside reward him with "good boy and a snack he'll soon learn that going outside is a pleasant thing to do. to clean up the messes put 1/4 cup of bleach into water, that will help him not smell it

Punishing bad behaviour doesn't work. It only confused the dog. Rubbing the dogs nose in it does no good, again it just confuses the dog.

Rewarding good behaviour is much better. Dogs like to go to the toilet straight after eating, so take it outside as soon as it has been fed. The minute it starts to go, make a real fuss "Good Dog, Good dog, etc" in a slightly high pitched voice. pat it when it is finished and tell it how good it was.

Do the same just before you put the dog down for its night sleep. The dog will want to please you, so it soon realises that going to the toilet at the correct place and time is a good thing.

You have to be consistent and it may take a long time, like up to 6 months but eventually it will work.

If the dog has been mistreated, it will urinate out of fear and it takes a long time to break this behaviour. Rubbing the dogs nose in its business only creates more fear.

Just keep at it.

To train an adult dog, you need to take him out 7 times per day.
When he first wakes up, again right after each of two meals, and the other 4 times in between and at bedtime. Feed at the same two times daily, putting the bowl away after each feeding. Take him out a total of at least 7 times daily. Don't just put him outside, but walk him for 5 minutes. Walking stimulates elimination.
Keep a log of when he actually goes, and soon you will see his pattern. This should only take a few days. Once he seems consistent to go at certain times, then you can begin only taking him out at those times.
DON"T scold for mistakes or rub his nose or such. His behavior is stress related, and that only increases his stress. DO praise --big time--each time he does it outside. Soon he will begin to ask you.

If you can afford it sign up for a dog training class. It will give you techniques to train a dog in ways which a dog understands. Also, there are many books available for helpful hints.

Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer has a site in yahoo and a site in myspace which offers blogging and questions/answers. Give it a try!

Paper training still a best way to go! Put paper close to the door you use to go out and separate him there from rest of the house for couple of days with water and his bed. Take him out regularly, even if already did his unwanted pees... When he does it outside, tell him good dog. Try this couple of days...

Get a book on crate training. Dogs don't like to go where they sleep so they will usually hold it while crated. As soon as you take him out take him straight outside. When you're not home, keep him in the crate so he won't mess up the house.

I hate to say this but its kind of hard to teach a old dog new tricks. If he does it well on paper sweetie put the paper down.
