There are several different things you need to be doing.
* Research bike and other laws in your area, so that no solution inadvertently violates some rule
** you might stop by a police station & ask for suggestions as to what is legal, not legal, common mistakes other people in your situation make that you can avoid with their advice
* Make sure cars can see you from a distance
* Protect yourself from spills and scrapes
* Protect yourself trom monsters & trolls
Cars see you
==========
You should be wearing light colored clothing
You should have a light colored safety helmet
You need to have reflectors or rear light
It does not hurt to have extra reflectors
I have seen pedestrians with reflectors on their shoes
I have seen bikers with reflectors on their clothing
Protection from accidents
====================
Safety helmet
Goggles ... so insects do not fly into your eyes, dust also
Long sleeves, and cover your legs ... so if there is a fall, your body is muffled from scrapes and scratches
Years ago, I was on a motor scooter, went around a curve too fast, skidded, and my body fell onto gravel ... o o o o o h h
Protection from monsters and trolls
===========================
Have at easy grasp, like on a chain around your neck
* Loud whistle
* Mace
Be able to do 911 on your cell in a jiffy
If there is someone normally home about the time you get home ... you might want to phone them right before you leave work, have them know the route you travel, so if you not get home wihin an hour, they could come looking for you
or from the other end ... a friendly co-worker ... if you & they leave about same time & if they about same distance from their home in travel time ... you call each other after you get home "I'm Ok" If no call, friends try to check up on each other

You ask if it safe riding at night. Well don't know what type neighbor you are riding through. Make sure you have reflectors (at all angles), flashing red light on back and shining light on front. If the path gets too dark to see it's better to get off and walk. You be much safer bumping into some thing by walking than hitting while riding.

It sounds like you have a pretty good, safe attitude about riding home already. Maybe try calling someone right before you leave, and then call them when you get to your destination. Tell them that it they don't hear from you in x number of minutes, that they should first try to call you and then if they don't hear from you, call the police. Wear bright clothes too, and put a bell or small horn on your bike so you can make noise if approached by someone you don't know

If your talking about being safe as far as attackers go, check into personal alarms. Sounds silly I know but wait. This would be to draw attention to your situation only. Next, pepper spray. Aim for the neck. Trust me. That will make it go where its supposed to ( Eyes,Nose,Mouth and delicate facial skin). Mace is only with available with proper certification but you can purchase higher strength pepper spray concentrations at Big 5 I believe. Its marketed for backpackers and is called Bear Formula... strength something like that. Now you have a choice to make. Attacker temporarily disabled. Do you want to get back on your huffy and speedily ride home to safety and warm biscuits or do introduce his face to Mr. Mag-Lite( Use a 3 cell)

maybe you can do a 'dry run' during the daytime and watch and remember the not so safe safe spots at night
also enjoy the night and slow down a little bit

You should get one of those battery powered flashing red reflector lights for your back, and where a neon colored safety vest along with the headlight in front, and wear a helmet.

do you drive a car? if you do then you should do that. if you don't then call your friends or someone to pick you up. it very dangerous to go by yourself at night. if you ride your bicycle, it pretty safe but car is better
