Within the city limits are JFK and LaGuardia[ however the first NY area airport was Newark -EWR-. Legend has it that when Mayor Fiorello Laguardia flew into Newark he refused to get off the plane saying that since his ticket said New York that where he expected to land.

There are actually three major airports in NYC. That's why the NYC airports are less crowded than the ones in O'Hare in Chicago or LAX in Los Angeles. The three are JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports.
