I have 3 1/2 inch white plantation shutters in my dining room, and i'm thinking that i would like to put up drapes to add to the room (solid color duponi silk), but i would hate to buy the drapes, drill holes in my wall, hang them up and decide that i don't like them .... so could anyone advise me on whether it would look good or look wierd, or if anyone has done this or seen this done ... thanks in advance! = )

Personally, I think I would just leave the plantation shutters. They are gorgeous on their own. I wish I had them, but they wouldn't fit my windows. Instead, I would add to the room with interesting artwork, throw pillows, or a really sexy textured rug. OR...try painting your room a striking color to make the shutters and furnishings pop!! (Hey! It's only paint!!)
If you really want to see what it looks like, try pinning fabric in a similar color over the windows. That should give you some idea before you invest.

Personally, I like the combination of curtains and blinds or shutters. The curtains can really dress up the room. Instead of hanging them right away, open the shutters(if the open into the room) and drape the curtains over the top. Then close the shutters again, and arrange the curtains in different ways to see how they will look. If you don't like it, take them back. If you do, then go ahead and hang them permanently. Curtains, tied back around the windows will still allow you to show off the shutters, and give you the option of opening the shutters and using the curtains to filter the light coming into the room. Remember, it's your home. You live there, so decorate to make yourself happy.

Plantation shutters are a great choice in window covering, they offer a lot of flexibility in how much light you allow into the room. Because you are considering covering them up in your dining room, I assume you are planning a softer look for the room. If so, then silk drapes would be a great way to go. Using fabric will bring a softer, more romantic feel to the room, and help absorb sound too!

Though shutters certainly stand alone beautifully, a drape can be added if that is the look you want. The drape will add softness and texture to the room. I wouldn't have the drapery close across the window.....merely "frame" each side.

would look weird
maybe just a length of cloth up and over to frame the top and sides...scarf like...but don't cover the shutters

Why don't you tack them to the wall for the first couple of days to see if you like the way it looks? If you like it, then officially place them, if you don't, no harm done.
