Often Shiva and Shankar are thought to be one but there is a subtle difference between them.
While Shiva is the One supreme being, Shankar is his creation.
Shiva as the name suggests is Benevolent. Is formless, ageless, timeless, is above everything is the supreme creator, the "Bramha" itself.
Shiva's creations for the proper fuctioning of the cosmos are
1. Bramha - The Generator
2. Vishnu - The Operator
3. Shankar - The Destructor
These three combined together define GOD.
The difference between Shiva and Shankar is the same as in between a Sculptor and the self-sculpture he created.
This is the reason that Shiva is worshipped in the 'linga' form -a form of absolute, a form of shoonya, a form of an ovoid resembling that of the bramhanda. While Shankar is represented in the physical form of an ascetic meditating. If Shankara and Shiva were the same whom did Shankara meditate upon? Actually Shankara is the creation of Shiva and hence is seen meditating upon Shiva in his representations.
Shankar resembles Shiva the closest amongst the trinity due to his ascetic nature.
Parvati is the form of Shakti the female manifestation of Bramha. Parvati is the consort of Shankar.
Hope this helps.

There is no difference between the names Lord Shiva and Shankar. Both denotes the Same God in the Hindu pantheon. Ma Parvathi is the consort of Lord Shiva. Among the Hindus names of Gods change as per the context and attributes. Lord Vishnu has got 1000 names in "Vishnu Sahasranama". slokas. Similarly other Gods and Gods also have "Sahasranamavali>

Shiva, Shankar, Sivan, Natarajan, Puli thol sevagan are some of the names that refers to Lord Shiva. Like a pet name, several people have given him several names. Everything refers to the same almighty.
The hubby of Parvathi, Meenakshi, Kamatchi, Amman (all refers to the same person) is Lord Shiva himself.

Both Shiva and Shankar are one at the same and his consort is Parvathi. She too have different names.
In Hindu mythology each God is having several names. Basing on their functions or physical features etc these names are coined.
Shiva is called Chandrasekhara because he wears a crescent moon on his forehead. He is also called Gangadhara as River Ganges stays in his hair locks.
Since Shiva conquered death{mrityu}, he is called Mrityunjaya.

You are confused between SHIV and SHIVA
SHIV Ling is the sign of eternal GOD also known as Par Brahman.
God made trinity
Brahman Vishnu Mahesh
Shiva is Lord Shankar.
We also celebrate Shivaratri not Shiv ratri.
Shiv Ling is eternal god and three strips on it indicated brahman vishnu mahesh (shiva)

God or Paramatma is only one, and we worship that God as Father, Mother or Teacher of the Universe. The Vedic religion, which is popularly known as Hindu religion, emphasizes this fact Hinduism is the oldest living religious tradition in the world and is also known as Sanatana Dharma and Vedic Dharma. It is not a single religion but a set of different schools of thought and traditions. Hinduism is a mixture of many religious rituals, sects and philosophies and all of them are different from each other in different parts of India. Majority of Hindus follow the Vedanta philosophy of one God (Brahman) who is worshipped in many forms like Vishnu, Siva, Durga, etc. Different schools of Hinduism follow different paths or means for salvation. The four main paths that most of the schools follow are: the path of devotion- "Bhakti", the path of action-"Karma", the path of meditation- "Raja" and the path of enlightenment- "Jnana". The basis of Hindu philosophy is that all souls that are born from Brahman (Cosmic Spirit) finally merge with it. Lord Vishnu is milk; Lord Siva is Yogurt from the Brahma-Samhita ., Just as milk is transformed into curd by the action of acids, but yet the effect curd is neither same as, nor different from, its cause, viz., milk, so I adore the primeval Lord Govinda of whom the state of Śambhu (Siva) is a transformation for the performance of the work of destruction

Don't mistake Shiv and Shanker are the same.Shiv embraces wider concept like space, cosmic energy that extends as long as this Universe where as Shanker is the godly human form given by the Supreme Power Aadi Shakti !
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•Shiv Ling is not the private part of the god Shanker.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•Shiv Ling means Shiv=Supreme Power including Cosmic energy which is shapeless, endless and Ling means Pillar; Resembling the the extend of Universe...Know your religion and respect !
.........Shiv and Shanker are not same.Shiv is the prime source of all Universe. The Almighty.Shiv is not what normally hindu think (having legs and hands).Do you know whom Shanker always meditate ?Whom did he concentrate on his meditation(Dhyaan)? And the same implies to Lord Bishnu too.Yes, its Shiv.Shiv-Linga is not any private part of any god.Linga suggests pillar/faith/base.In south india, there are names like Ramlingam, so what you derive from it ? It, simply, is the faith towards Ram.
Shiv Ling denotes the pillar of this Universe. We worship Shiv Ling in the faith that we worship the very base of this Life foundation. After Big Bang, the universe is expanding and stretching in both direction forming a cylindrical shape and Hindus made it in the form of Shiv Ling and that we worship.Anti-Hindus always criticize that.If we talk each others difference then this life will be too short because there are millions of ways to criticize each other and other can too make different understanding of other religions' rituals too.
And always know the difference between Lord,Devi-Devtaas and One Param Ishwor(or some say Bhagwan)Param Ishwor is the single prime source of light from which these all lords and devi devtas emerges.Param Ishwor is invisible and visible.Param Iswhor remains neutral. He will not select Bad over good or good over bad.HE set up a fixed guidelines of life on which living beings and even the non-living things should follow. This all things are from Vedas but pundits and babas do not say these.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•Your religion is not hindu, it is Vedic Sanatan Dharma came along with Vedas.Hindu name was given by the ancient people across the Indus river(Afghanistan/Gulf side) who couldn't say Indus correctly, so they started saying Hindu,Hindu !THere is no word as such Hindu in Vedas or Bhagwad Geeta !
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•Also notice that Dharma and Religion is two totally different thing. You can search the meaning of both in dictionary or Google-"Dharma" and "Religion"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
•Dharma embraces wider concept of way of living and principles of life. Its Absolute and True like nature.•Religion is just a community that distributes the belief system , to have faith in something, it makes you believe.
hahaha..I suggest you to read once Shreel Prabhupad's SHreemad Bhagwad geeta once ! It will change your way of seeing life and religion ! ;) -----------------------
