First to lochmessy and beckyschristine...

Tell me... who was president Kitty Hawk?

maybe you could tell me who President Halsey was?

no?

President Hue City?
President Cowpens?
President Chicago?
President Los Angeles?

We name our ships after a WHOLE LOT MORE than just US presidents, silly girls.

now to peddler_70...
We don't have battleships anymore, why would we name a battleship after him? there are more types of ships than battleships.

To everyone else on this question who answered that it would be inappropriate to name a warship after Dr. King, I think the man would be proud to be so honored.

and here is why....
(I'm about to get cruxified by the anti-military liberals here)

While Dr. King was pacifistic in his beliefs even he recognized that sometimes you have to fight for your freedoms. He would not condemn our fighting the Germans or the Japanese for their actions in WW2. There is such a thing as a just cause to fight for. Violence was not neccessary for the civil rights and he preached a non-violent fight for civil rights.

Our military (regardless of what some idiot liberals may think) stands to protect and insure the very freedoms that Dr. King fought for for all his life. When a Disaster happens somewhere in the world, it is our Military (Often from Navy Ships) that are some of the first responses to bring aid, food, and medicine to those who are in need.

Maybe a strictly combat vessel would not be the best choice, but the Navy has many types of non-combattant ships from hospital ships to supply ships. But even if it was a combat ship, our Navy is not an oppressor and aggressor navy. Our navy fights to protect freedom.
I personally think Dr. King would be honored to have a Navy ship named after him.

That said, I don't know if it will ever happen though. When our ships are not being named after non-people (States, Cities, Battles, Ideals, etc..) or Presidents, They are named after people who have been military and were highly decorated (usually posthumously), or are famous military leaders.

Whenever a ship has been named after a civilian person... that person has directly contributed to the military in an overt way.
For Example:
The USNS Bob Hope was named after Bob Hope the comedian who dedicated much of his career to the moral and welfare of troops fighting overseas with his USO tours.

King stood for freedom. Naming a ship that protects freedom after him would be a fitting tribute. However King has not ever directly contributed to the Military and so it is not likely to ever happen. there are too many other more appropriate people ahead of him that will get that honor first.

It's possible. Seeing as how there is an USS Bob Hope, I can't see why there won't be an USS MLK.

The following is a site which explains a little about the different ships and where their names come from:http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/names.htm

This is a site about the Navy honoring his legacy:http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=21975

EDIT: jeeper_peeper321 is correct, but he forgot that Missile Guided Cruisers and Ballistic Submarines can be named after distinguished Americans.

Since Martin Luther was anti military I do not think that this would be something he would want. I think he would rather have hospitals and schools named after him than a warship.

Even though Martin Luther King Jr. was a great American icon, I doubt that there would be a ship named after him because he was not a President.

Since he was a pacifist, why would you want a battleship named after him? I doubt he'd be top of anyones list. I think there are better things to name in his honor.
