how old is your boyfriend? is he over the age of 18?

the rule in my house was if you did not go to college you had to pay rent. so both me and my brother have chosen to go to college and i am positive my youngest brother will too.

paying rent to your parents helps you realize how much it cost to live out there in the world. it is actually a helpful thing.

if he is not over 18, does his parents need the money? in a lot of countries, children often get little part time jobs to help the parents out. sometimes there are situations that can not be helped.

I have an 18 year lod son, he has graduated from high school and is now working 30 hours a week. He is holding a job better than he used to, but I wished he would go back to school at least for a trade[ I am a hairdresser and I do well for myself. Well we started charging him 25.00 a week about 4 weeks ago as of September he will pay 50.00 a week. He realizes he could never live for this amount. We still pay for his health insurance and whenever we order out we pay. I never leave him out he is my son. but he gladly contributes. He saved 3500.00 for a car and bought it himself. He pays for full coverage car insurance so he dosen't take a loss if something happens. This all has taught him to be much more responsible and I am very proud of him. If he does go back to school soon he will not have to pay rent until he finishes, I hope that is incentive for him.I would not have charged him rent before he was 18 as long as he was in school/ I had a real hard time charging him, but we needed some help and he feels better also. Good Luck

It is a parent's responsibility to educate a child on how to live in the real world. By making everything too easy the child does not learn. The real world is a tough place. Children need to see parents as people and emotional support not a source of money. Up until the age of 18 yes the parent should support the child.

I think as soon as they start earning money they should be made a little bit responsible for themselves. My daughter pays a small amount of board but she saves and runs a car and is quite responsible. Any other way and I would charge her more rent. Plus if I was earning less money she may need to pay more rent... t

If he is working and can give some money to his parents that is great. My parents never made me pay rent but I had to pay for my car which was fine. I always tell my kids they should pay rent but I would never make them, unless they turn 18 and still living at home.

Anyone over the age of 18 in good health who is not in school and not living on their own should be paying rent and more.

What you are saying is that your parents owe you. Obviously it would benefit you if you had to pay rent.

it depends on the situation, if your still in school or college yes it's wrong. education should always come first and time and energy should be spent on a good education not working. On the other hand if your 18 or older and not in school your an adult and you should be out working and if your living at home you should be paying some rent after all at 18 your parents are no longer responsible for you financially and could legally put you out and believe me it's alot more expensive on your own.If he's over the age of 18 I'm sure his parents are just trying to teach him responsibility. if he's under the age of 18 then this is wrong they are legally responsible for him.

How old is your boyfriend? And do your boyfriend work full-time? If he's over 18yrs or not in high school heck yeah, how else is she gonna make him responsible. You dont want a mama's boy do you? Plus this way he'll wanna get he's own place soon cause why pay rent and still have to follow moms rules.

We have 2 sons (19 & 21) and they have both paid "board" since they started working. It isn't alot but it's enough to teach them responsibility and the importance of budgeting.
I can't say for sure if their upbringing has made them sensible with money but I think it's made them more aware of the benefits of planning and saving.
Both of them have bought their own cars (with their savings) and opened a separate account for maintenance, tyres, registration etc. Neither of them live beyond their means....they are always conscious of what money's coming in and what they're spending.
If your boyfriend is unhappy about the arrangement maybe he could talk to his Mum about it....she might consider reducing the amount? Everyone's circumstances are different.

It's not that he is supporting his mum but he is a grown man and if he was in his own place he have to pay rent so why not her? He is using water, light. utility and he is eating the food and all of this is coming out of her pocket so he can contribute to the things that he is using. You have to pay to stay and that is where ever he is staying.
