May, 2008 I am planning a march on Washington DC for free health care in the USA. This is a great cause and our nation really needs to join the rest of the western world in the idea of a we society not a me society. I was wondering how everyone feels about this cause and who's with me in the fight to get free and universal health care?

Go ahead, it's a free country. Just be sure you post the date and time of your little get-together. I only live 3 hours from DC. I'll be sure to drop by with my "death to socialism" posters in hand.

1. Because we know it isn't free and we know damned well who is going to end up paying for it. 2. Even if the plan was great one (and it isn't, it sucks) the Government screws up everything. They have never in the history of the US ran a program efficiently, effectively or anything resembling on budget. If past performance is an indication, it will cost 5-8 times more than the $1.3 Trillion they have stated. 3. Our Constitution does not give Congress or the President the authority to run such a program. The population of England is around 61 million. You have had Socialized Health Care for about 60 years. Have you got it it right? NO! Anyone who likes it will even admit it has it flaws. The US has 300 Million. Can you try to foresee the problems of developing a "free" health care plan for that? Hell, we have by most estimates at least 20 million illegals in this country. That's a 3rd of your population. What do you think will happen to that number if we suddenly had free health care?

Fire half of the Government and then use those monies for State ,Federally Funded Schools, all the way through college, and it may have a chance.
Tort Reform and limits on Negligence/Malpractice suits, would put half the Attorneys out of work.
March all you want, it isn't going to happen. Pharmaceutical Corporations make way too much profit off the pain and suffering of others, and Doctors, a good 50% are in on that.
I have been to England and was injured while I was there, yes the Health Care system took care of me, was a wait, always is, but it worked.
Maybe every Dr. has to do five years of Universal Care before they can go private, best of both worlds.
The problem is the Drug Companies and the Medical Suppliers that make billions every quarter off the sick.
Communism doesn't work, that point has been proven. Socialism sorta works. Takes alotta taxes to keep it going.
A nice flat rate tax of 5% of EVERYTHING that an individual owns, or earns, or profits from. that could get the ball rolling.
Still have to fire half the government.

There are a lot of things that need to go into a free healthcare system. Remember that drugs in the USA arn't cheap compared to the same drugs offered in Europe and Canada. We may end up paying a lot more than Europeans and/or Canadians do if there is a free healthcare system. It will also require a massive increase in income taxes than we have right now.
I think this is a great idea, but unfortunately what seperates America from the rest of the world is exactly that. It's a me society. Capitalism really isn't about "we"- that's socialism. If you are agreeing strongly with your ideas, you should be an avid supporter of Hillary Clinton who wants to turn the USA into (I think! and hope!) a socialist country like those in Europe.

Doesn't look like it's gonna be much of a turn out Melody. I guess Americans DO realize that there is no such thing as "free" health care. Someone has to pay and that means higher taxes. We're already paying 15% Fed (at the lower end), 15% FICA (half comes out of your check before you see it), plus property tax (passed on in rent in case you're wondering), plus 7-10% sales tax, plus state income tax.

Hmmm, looks like the lower end of the tax bracket is already about 40%! How much more can I afford.

Well, first off, it wouldn't be "free" because we would be paying for it somehow. I personally believe that health care should be EARNED by means of employment. Most jobs you get will offer health care through benefits (unless you're a bum working at fast food, IMO), as well as dental, life, vision, etc. Sorry folks, health care shouldn't be free. Is living in a home free? Is getting and maintaining a car free? Are funerals and tombstones free? No. Someone is paying for it. Get out, get a job, EARN your health care. EARN your right to live. This isn't a free world - make a name for yourself and earn something in your dam.n life.

Poor Melody, it looks good on paper, but we just can't afford it! But at least a march would let them know we are sick and tired of getting screwed without the vasoline they charge an arm and a leg for! I for one wish that they would do something to help,at least with prescriptions

What do you mean by FREE !!!! ????? I would first want to know how much money this free health care will cost me. If it is more than I pay now , you can have it as long as I don't have to pay for you >

Sorry, but I have a job.

I'd love to know how this "free" health care of yours is going to be paid for. Manna from heaven, perhaps, or do you plan to tax the s**t out of everyone like Canada does?

There's no such thing as free health care. Even with all its tax revenue, France can't afford its health care system.

We already have universal access to health care. I don't see why we need more.
