Luxating patellas is a genetic issue. Surgery can repair this, as it will get worse and arthritic with age. They are also more prone to tearing ligaments in the knee.
Have the vet show you what to do when they pop out of place. Usually gently straightening the leg and massage the patella will help. Many times it pops into place on it's own.

if the knee is coming out of place it sounds like luxating patella. Small dogs are prone to this type of problem. When it is stuck to one side or the other a vet will usually bend the knee and feel the patella (knee cap) and guide it back towards center. Ultimately, the only permanent repair is surgical. The patellar groove, which is where the knee cap is supposed to sit is widened and deepened a bit and sometime the ligaments are supplemented or replaced with wires or synthetic material. Best of luck.

Veteranarians are trained professinals and go to school for at least 8 years to train for that sort of problem. If you are in need of immediate care and in Texas you can call 1 800 356 3692 or just wait until your vet opens in the morning. Trying to fix the knee your self can only cause more problems in the future and later on in their life.

If you are not a vet then do not do this. Try teaching your dog not to jump on high things.

If you are uncertain how to do it, DO NOT EVEN TRY. I cannot stress that you may complicate things even more...where did you get this dog? If from a pet store, your dog may have come from a puppy mill. It may be inbred, and things are probably going to get worse...

You can't. He has luxating patellas and it requires surgery to fix. PLEASE leave his little knees alone. You may cause further injury and pain to him.
