So many people think that they can make money off breeding their dogs. They don't take into consideration that they may not get any healthy puppies. (My vet just told me of a story of 9 puppies brought into her that all had parvo! The "breeder" stated that she gave them the vaccination herself so it couldn't be possible! Well, all the puppies died. The vaccine was bought on-line and obviously wasn't a vaccine at all!) They don't think of what will happen if the dog needs a c-section. (They usually just let her die when a puppy gets stuck!) They also don't think about what will happen if they can't sell their cute little $900 yorkilabradoodle!!
People are looking for a quick buck that they don't have to work for, so why not make their poor dog eat Ol' Roy, and pop out puppies every six months or so? I really hate some people.

I think it's a combination of factors:
Number one would be GREED - my girl's ovaries can make me a couple of grand every 6 months with no effort on my part.
Kennel Blindness - "my darling is as good as any other dog out there, so what if she hasn't got a title, has never had a health check yet alone genetic tests, and bites anything that looks like moving".Another one that goes with that "my dog is so sweet, everyone will want one just like her" despite the fact there are dozens just as sweet down at the local shelter, and 2 columns of cheap and give away pups in the paper.
Ignorance, in an overwhelming abundance of guises:
" I don't know what's going on with my female dog, but all the male dogs seem real curious about her". If you choose to keep your animals intact, it's your obligation to learn about canine reproduction so you can prevent it happening. If you find it too much of an "icky" subject, please consider getting them "fixed".
"Breeding dogs is easy and profitable" (forget that - one complication can cost more in vet bills than you'll get for the whole litter - if they even survive, and you can lose the mother as well).
"My boy regularly disappears for a few days at a time - don't know what he gets up to but he's pretty exhausted when he finally comes home"
It sometimes seems human stupidity is the world's only infinite resource. Sorry for turning my reply into a rant, but owner accountability just doesn't seem to be a strong point in most places.

I think most people believe that THEIR puppies will find wonderful, loving homes, and never be turned into a shelter. They don't realize that that is what everyone thinks! But only a few breeders take the responsibility for their puppies for the rest of it's life, should the new owner not be able to keep it or care for it. If everyone did this, I don't think we'd have much of a problem!

Too many Back Yard Breeders out there wanting to make a quick buck. They have no concept of what may happen to the offspring and where they all wind up. They must not really love there dogs enough because they are willing to risk the chance of the mother dying during the birthing.

Unfortunately, here in China the same sad stories happen everyday. People here simply think fixing a dog inhumane and cruel. Every time i tell people i had my two fur kids neutered, they just say "oh, no, poor little things!" or "i have never done this to my dog, i think it will lose its manhood for being fixed!". Then i have to explain again and again fixing makes no changes in a dog's personality, bringing about lots of benefits to its health instead. Most pet owbers here find the idea of fixing their pets the most unacceptable thing.

I agree with all the answers above.
I think some of the pregnancy questions are also bored teenagers who are looking for a responce and know that pregnancy/breeding questions is the way to do it. I cant wait till school starts back up.

People only think of themselves when doing these stupid things to our lovely animals, they only think of money, they should try thinking from an animals point of view......What animal wants to be in a shelter? I know none, every time I go to a shelter, the animals there are trying to get out of there. Poor Kids.....

That is a good question. I wonder about that too. Where I live our pound used to put over 1000 dogs to sleep a week. They just made it a no kill shelter. Which actually makes me worry. I think that only licensed breeders should own intact dogs.

Lack of education. People dont watch what they dont want to see....if they saw what happens, maybe they would think twice..never pass up the chance to educate someone about unwanted pets and shelter life or death.

because so many people think that having puppies is fun, or they think they will make some money. They are obviously people who don't do any homework or have clue what they are doing. It's unfortunate because they give the word "breeder" a bad name.
