You shouldn't really bathe your dog with human shampoo. Most of them have too many perfumes and other chemicals that irritate their skin. However, it is fine to use baby shampoo on them.

It is no good to bathe a dog in human shampoo. It is too drying on their coat and skin, and can cause allergy problems in some dogs. The only human shampoo that is moderately ok to use is baby shampoo, and even then, it should be used only as a last resort.
Also, never use flea shampoo on your dog unless it has fleas. Flea shampoo is VERY harsh, even if it has natural ingrediants. It is meant to kill things after all.

It shouldn't cause any problems, unless the dog has a skin condition or is allergic to an ingredient in the shampoo. It is better to use a shampoo that's formulated for dogs because humans and dogs have a different pH (human is 5.5, dog is 7.5). So, for the best results, use dog shampoo. Mild dish soap can also be used if the dog doesn't have any skin problems.

human shampoo has stronger chemicals that dog shampoo does - It probably won't make his fur fall out, but he will probably have dry skin and some flakes - I recommend an oatmeal based dog shampoo and bathing no more than once a month.

Some of the ingredients may be harsh to your dog or the perfume can cause and allergy, my vet says that it drys their skin out. I have given our dog a bath with baby shampoo, but only once in a while. It is best to stick with dog shampoo. My vet said to stay away from Hartz, he said that he has seen more harm than good come from owners using their products.

I definitely agree on using a dog shampoo over most human shampoos. But, I did find that the more expensive, organic brands are pretty low in alcohol and elements that can result in a waxy and/or stripped out feeling-- both in human and dog hair.

It won't usually hurt their hair, but it will dry out their skin and cause dandruff. It is okay to bathe your dog with human shampoo, but do it as a last resort.

Don't use human shampoo as it will dry out the skin and the dog will get flakes like dandruff.

Funny thing, I just gave my dog a bath today!
Human shampoo tends to dry out their skin and coat...and dogs can't replenish moisture the way we can. Of course, you can combine human shampoo with a good human conditioner to counteract some of the effects...but human shampoo can't kill fleas and it doesn't generally contain the deodorizing agents you get in doggie shampoos.
I actually use a little of both. I use doggie shampoo (Carters) for his body and I use Johnson's baby shampoo for his face and neck. I've been doing this for years and it works great...no eye irritation from the baby shampoo so I can just hose off his face, and the doggie stuff makes him smell great (and kills fleas)!
