I know a CDA can work in any state and an RDA can only work in the state they are registered in , but other than that, whats the difference. What can an RDA do that a CDA can't?

Just because you have your CDA does not mean you can work doing expanded duties in all states... some states require a Dental Assisting license from the State Education Department to perform expanded duties. Each state has their own requirements and scope of practice for assistants.

Accredited dental assisting programs are structured to prepare students for the Certified Dental Assisting (CDA) examination. The exam is composed of three components: Radiation Health and Safety, Infection Control, and General Chairside (clinical) Assisting. The examinee must pass all three components before being awarded the CDA credential. Information from the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB) states as follows: The American Dental Association recognizes DANB to be the certification board for dental assistants. And, the American Dental Assistants Association approves DANB and endorses the DANB's CDA (Certified Dental Assistant) credential.

Many states have additional certification and licensing credentials. These credentials are often termed Expanded Functions Assistant or Registered Dental Assistant (RDA). In some states, dental assistants may acquire advanced certification for the specialties of orthodontics or oral surgery. All of these classifications require passing written examinations, and some states also require passing a clinical exam as well. It is a professional development choice to pursue the Certified Dental Assistant credential, or any of the advanced registered or expanded functions credentials.

I believe this answers your question.
