I found an ill looking kitten in our alley. He looked to only be maybe a couple weeks old, he had flies all around him. I was afraid he was going to die. Needless to say I took him in put him in a shoe box and gave him some warm milk. He drank the milk like crazy, is this a good sign that he's going to be alright? He also has all this gunk around his eyes, I have no clue what it is..my only speculation is that he's just beggining to get his sight? Anyway, where do I go from here..Im not good with cats..I have dogs. Should I try feeding him moist food or just stick to milk? If he ends up being alright I think Im going to let my roomate have him as a pet since he likes cats.

Don't give him cow's milk. Cats are lactose intolerant and it may cause him diarrhea, indigestion, and vomiting. You should go get some kitten formula from the grocery or pet store. Also, get him checked out at the vet. He might carry worms. The best thing to do is the vet and you can get all your questions answered and check on his health.

It's so nice of you to take him in! Makes me smile :)
I hope you keep him!

If it is as young as you think, you will kill it with milk OR cat food. Many pet stores, including the major chains, sell canned kitten formula which nutritionally resembles the milk of the mother cat. That can be bottle - fed to a 2 week old kitten, which should not be eating any cat food until 4 - 6 weeks old. However, I think you underestimated its age, since you did not mention bottle feeding the kitten the milk, and a 2 week old kitten cannot lap out of a dish. Even so, the kitten should have the canned kitten formula mixed with some canned kitten (not cat) food. Cow's milk will give it diarrhea, and in its weakened state it might dehydrate and die. The gunk around its eyes is due to a respiratory or eye infection. It really needs to be checked by a vet, to see if it needs medication. Kittens are very delicate, and orphan kittens are much more likely to die than orphan puppies. If you are unwilling to pay for a vet, you should drop it at a shelter where it will get veterinary care before it is adopted out. If you will not do that, in some states it is legal to sell some veterinary antibiotics over the counter - go to an agriculture / livestock store, and see if they sell veterinary antibiotic opthalmic ointment (MUST be OPTHALMIC!), and put it in the kitten's eyes 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days. But really, no one should keep a kitten unless they are willing to get it regular veterinary care, so either give it to a shelter or go to a vet and take his advice instead of mine.

awwww!!! that was very nice of u to save him cause he could of died!!! well this is my advice: dont keep giving him milk because he can get diarrea and other illnesses. buy him some food for kittens at the store. take him to the vet so he can get checked up. the gunky stuff is probably from an eye infection he has. handle him with gloves so u wont catch anything it probably has.the vet will tell u if he is a boy or a girl, how old it is, and if it has any dieases. take him a bath and handle it wit care. after u take it a bath, dont forget 2 disinfect ur tub. after the bath, dont get it by cold air, cuz itll die.dry it wit an old towel and let it keep that towel.make sure its warm at night. hope i helped u and good luck

Sounds like it has upper respitory infection and needs antibiotics.
Milk will give it diahhera so buy a can of goats milk. It is with carnation canned milk in the grocery store. Go by directions on can. 1 can of goats milk to a can of water. Mix well. Give it to the kitty warm.
I have cats & kittens, no dogs.
Good luck.

Listen, you seriously need to contact a humane society in your area to help with all the questions you have about this kitten. I don't know how old it is, but if it has teeth, it could eat crunchy kitten kibble. Moist food is good for a treat, but they can't live on it because it is mostly water. You'd have to feed them more often than you probably have time for.

If it has teeth, try crunching up kitten food and giving it some. Provide plenty of water.

You can go to Petfinder.com and at the top it has "Shelters and Rescue Groups" Click on that and it should ask you your zip code. Then go to your city on the list and contact one of those humane societies for help. Do not take the kitten to a city shelter, as it will probably be euthanized. (Put to sleep)

Good luck!

i'll make this simple:
go to the vet and have him/her checked
if its not old enough for solid food, go to grocery store and buy a can of kitten milk and a bottle in the pet isle. **regular milk is loved by cats, but it causes digestive upsets and diarrhea, which your new dehydrated baby does not need. just do the best you can...at least youre giving it what it wasnt going to ever have: a chance at life!

Try to give the kitten some kitten food and try water insead of milk because kittens and cats should not have milk because it could make the kitten sick. At the pet store they cat milk for kittens. I hope the kitten gets better.

Never ever give a kitten cows milk, it hardens their stomach and it may kill her, depending on the age. My sisters cat had kittens and the mother got out and we never saw her again and my sister fed the kittens cow milk not knowing and all 3 of them died. If you need a home for the kitten I would love him/her. I am experienced in bottle feeding kittens and can take it to the vet ASAP. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime.

Cows milk is not the best and should not be a long term diet but it is oky for right now. Eating is a good sign, but you should get him to a vet asap in the moring. The vet will give you more directions.

The Stray Cat
Oh, what unhappy twist of fate
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth and food
For from that day I ceased to be
The master of my destiny.

While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house the law.
He scratched the furniture and shed
And claimed the middle of my bed.

He ruled in arrogance and pride
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, oh Cat,
I'd willingly relive all that
Because you come forlorn and thin
Well....don't just stand there,
Come on in...
