Is this a common action of the " People of the past" or is it an old custom that has lost its function.

It is not only Muslims. FGM (female genital mutilation) is a cross-cultural and cross-religious ritual performed throughout the world, including the United States and involves the removal of healthily functioning parts of a female's genitalia.

This is not just an African practice, it is also done by Muslims in the Middle East.

FGM is a social custom, not a religious practice. However, in those Muslim countries where it is practice, FGM is often justified by a controversial saying attributed to the Prophet Mohammed that seem to favor sunna circumcision involving minor cutting of the clitoris. The authenticity of these sayings are unconfirmed, and some scholars have refuted them. Even if true, they only permit the practice; they do not mandate it.

FGM has probably been performed for at least 1,400 years (some references estimate 2,000 years), and started during what Muslims call "al-gahiliyyah" (the era of ignorance). The Qu'r'an, Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and Christian Scriptures (New Testament) is silent on the subject. The Sunnah (the words and actions of the Prophet Mohammed) contains a reference to female circumcision.

It is a cultural thing and really has nothing to do with Islam. I have read my Quran front to back and nowhere does it say I should be circumsized.
On a side note, I have talked to muslimahs in countries that do practice it, (not the female genital mutilation which involves removing the entire clitoris and sometimes sewing up part of the vagina). These women only had a tiny portion of the skin on the clitoris removed, kind of like how men have the foreskin removed. They said it is nothing like the mutilation and it does not prevent them in any way from attaining orgasm. In fact a couple of them said it was better after they had experianced it both ways.
I'm not condoning it and I would certainly never have it done or have it done on any daughter I may have in the future. But it is right to know the difference.

It's part of the ultra-conservative culture of some Muslims. So as they wouldn't feel an orgasm when it's not yet time for them to marry or engage in pre-marital sex. It's an avoidance of committing sins against Allah or violating the Quran.

According to their Quran, the women should be handled and treated like fragile pearls. Although, they also have the right to file for a divorce.

i believe it is still in practice today, and not just with the muslims.
The clitoris is removed so that the woman may not experience orgasm during sex. They believe the only need for sex is procreation, not pleasure, well not for the woman anyway.

Female genital mutilation is not a Muslim practice but an African one. Some of those who do it are Muslims but just as many are Christians or other religions.

Male genital mutilation, circumcision, is compulsory for Jews and Muslims and practiced by many Christians.

I hope it is a old custom. There is another country that will sew up the vagina so they don't have sex. (Which as you can guess will cause an infection in time.) I saw this on Oprah.

Oh poor babies. Why do these women have children? That should be the question.

Why do some Christians remove the fore-skin from their young boys? What kind of god-awful practice is that? Door swings both ways, doesn't it?
