when i give a message in tongues, God often give me the interpretation also. but I always wait to give someone else the opportunity to give the interpretation. my wife always has the interpretation, but seldom feels uncomfortable giving it.
it should be give by 3, and they all should confirm each other.
in other words the interpretations should all say basically the same thing.

The rules are found in 1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 13 and 14.
Ideally the person who speaks to the body in tongues should pray that he should interpret those tongues himself.
That is found in 1 Cor 14:13 -- For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.
If you have more questions, feel free to ask.
It sounds like the church you went to is doing things according to the Bible.

Tonges and interpretation of tongues, is one gift
Prophesy is another
tongues and interpretation would be any way no real form
sometimes it is just one person, other times it depends on how many have the gift and who obeys the spirit
so it could be many, or few
Prophesy, is the gift to Prophesy at just one time to all
or tonges and prophesy
It does seem confusing, but it is not when you know how the spirit works

As long as there is interpretation, that's what matters.
1 Corinthians 14:13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
1 Corinthians 14:27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.

I have been in congregations where as many as a dozen spoke in tongues at the same time. One setting off the next. Each trying to outdo the other. Each reaching self induced climatic orgasm one after the other.

I don't think the mostly evangelical and Pentecostal churches that practice what you just described have any clue what speaking in tongues means. Having an epileptic-like seizure and babbling nonsense in public sounds less like worship to me and more like mass hysteria.

"This is so confusing to me" CHRIST'S GOSPEL IS NOT ONE OF CONFUSION...GOD CEASES TO BE GOD IN A CHURCH BASED UPON SUCH CONFUSION!!!!
....THAT should be the KEY difference in MAN'S understanding of the gift of tongues and GOD'S understanding of the gift HE provides with the same name...
Nearly all churches are based upon the philosophies of men..mingled with scripture...nearly ALL are created BY man for profit ....whether the faith itself benefits or whether there is a personal pocket the money is headed for...
When I served a mission for MY faith...I learned God's interpretation of the GIFT of Tongues as it OUGHT to be taught...NOT how MEN have doctored the teaching to their own understanding...
When I went to Brasil, I knew VERY little Portuguese...tourist Portuguese really..nothing worth bragging about...in 6 months...I was more or less fluent...the KEY being that the people whoi taught COULD ALSO understand me and were able to answer my questions as I did theirs...so the witnessing of the linguistic exchange was there...but there was no NEED for translators for me...i could translate what I needed and if needed, my Brazilian companion could provide me with simple small vocabulary words from time to time...the gift is understanding the language in an amt of time that most people could never accomplish...we're still human so there is still room for improvement...but that is why I studied everyday...
it took me over 5 years to learn Spanish with the same fluency...and THAT was WITH a Portuguese background as well as the 3 Years of French I had in high School....Spanish should have been EASY....IT WASN'T... because the NEED to speak Spanish was NOWHERE NEAR the need the Lord had for me to speak Portuguese on my mission...I WAS PUT IN BRASIL for a reason and speaking Portuguese was requisite towards my success there...and the FACT that I could UNDERSTAND a lot of Portuguese even in the first few weeks in Brasil, TO ME...is the GIFT OF TONGUES the way GOD intended it to be.....I still speak Portuguese now 12-13 years later and everyday more fluent...THAT has been MY responsibility...
My wife is Brazilian and we speak and have taught our children to speak in Portuguese and English....they will be bilingual by the time they go to Kindergarten....that puts them ahead of most kids at the same age because they see things on two levels as well as dealing with different cultures from the get go..they are not raised in the typical American ignorance that most kids settle with because they have no choice...
